Portion of Oaks Village's shelter could reopen before winter
The upper floor of Oaks Village 's homeless shelter could reopen for at least limited use before the winter. Garry Moore, Oaks Village's executive director, gave an update about the closed shelter at the Nov. 3 meeting of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners . "Our goal is to get the upstairs reopened, where we could accommodate 24 people for these coldest months of the year, even if it’s just a warming center for them," Moore said. Oaks’ shelter, 1018 E. Second St. in Monroe, was ordered closed in March after building and safety inspections identified significant "life-safety concerns" that needed to be addressed before the building could continue operating as an overnight shelter, the City of Monroe posted on its website late on March 17. Previous Coverage: Monroe's Oaks Village Shelter shut down for 'life-safety concerns' Since the spring, Moore said he and the Oaks board have been working with the City of Monroe and Monroe architect Jim Jacobs to address the issues. Moore said the project has three phases. Phase 1 is completed and cost about $75,000 plus donated materials and labor. Phase 2 is reopening of the upper floor. Phase 3 is full opening of the lower

Beverly development decision delayed after community testimony
Final approval was postponed Thursday on a plan from Maumee Valley Habitat Humanity to build nine houses on a South Toledo lot. “Would you consider deferring this case for 60 days so that you can ... not just go to previously scheduled meetings, but actually work with the plan commission staff to schedule a public meeting specifically about this project?” Brandon Rehkopf, chairman of the Toledo City Plan Commission, asked the CEO of the nonprofit. “Let the neighborhood come and answer questions and then consider based on the feedback if there are any potential amendments in this plan for this body to consider,” he said. The plan commission’s meeting Thursday was conducted before a pretty close to full house of attendees at One Government Center. Many attending the meeting were residents of the Beverly neighborhood where the houses are set to be built. The project is on the site of the old Beverly Elementary School at 4022 Rugby Dr. That building was torn down in 2012 and the land has been vacant since. Of the nine houses, two would be sold on the open market while the other seven would be sold to Habitat homeowners through the organization’s homeownership program.

UT to complete Swan Creek project with Great Lakes Commission grant
The University of Toledo has received another $897,557 from the Ann Arbor-based Great Lakes Commission to finish a nearly $1.2 million restoration project along Swan Creek on land the university owns north of its Health Science campus. University officials said crews will soon begin clearing trees and building an access route to reach 1,700 linear feet of the creek. The route runs through the property of neighboring ALRO Steel, which has granted access. Work along that section of Swan Creek began in 2023 after the commission allocated $242,000. The project is a small part of a much larger effort to restore the Maumee River, the Ottawa River, Swan Creek, and other Toledo-area waterways as part of a U.S.-Canada agreement made in 1987 to improve 43 areas of concern across the Great Lakes region.
