Helping Hands of St. Louis to give hundreds of children new shoes
Hundreds of children from East Toledo and beyond will receive new shoes to kick off the school year at Helping Hands of St. Louis’ annual Shoe Fest on Saturday. The 11th annual event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Helping Hands of St. Louis, 443 Sixth St. Children who attend the event will have their feet washed and then will be fitted for new shoes. The custom of washing the children’s feet is meant to mimic how Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, said Theresa Bugelholl, longtime volunteer and founder of the Shoe Fest. The event will be first come, first served, and while Helping Hands focuses on serving East Toledo families, no child will be turned away if their shoe size is in stock. There will also be face painting, balloons, and games to keep children occupied as they wait their turn, Ms. Bugelholl said.

Glenwood Lutheran Church Unveils The Change Wall
Glenwood Lutheran Church, 2545 Monroe St., recently unveiled a new mural, The Change Wall. The Change Wall is inspired by the award-winning children’s book written by Amanda Gorman, Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem, and particularly, Loren Long’s bright, colorful, “change inspiring” illustrations. The book depicts a young girl leading others on a “musical journey,” where they learn you can enact both small and big changes in their communities, the world and themselves.
City of Toledo Extends Deadline for New Flag Design
For the third time in the history of the City of Toledo a new flag will be adopted from a chosen local artist within the Toledo area, for the first time since 1993. The city was first founded in 1837 on Jan. 7 and got its first flag adopted in 1909 and was later redesigned in 1993. Since then the City of Toledo has not adopted a new flag that represents the City before us today. In recent years a local artist Jacob Parr designed a flag that had been submitted to City Council but was not adopted. Now the opportunity for local artist to showcase their designs and talent has come again with the city joining the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo to jury a new flag design contest for Toledoans to submit their best flag designs.

WACO, Texas — Even though he has turned the page, quarterback Dequan Finn looks back on his time in Toledo with the fondest of memories. The 2023 Mid-American Conference MVP with the Rockets, who he helped lead to an 11-2 record and an 8-0 mark in MAC play by throwing for 2,657 yards with 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions along with 563 rushing yards and seven more scores, Finn after last season transferred to Baylor. In 2022, the Detroit native helped Toledo to a 9-5 record and the MAC title, earning offensive MVP honors in both the MAC championship game and the Boca Raton Bowl. For his career, he threw for 7,074 yards with 63 touchdowns and 23 interceptions and he rushed for 1,840 yards and 25 scores on the ground as a Rocket.

Local charity holds free health fair in central city
Universal Health Aid Toledo, a charitable organization led by local high school students, will hold a free health fair Saturday. The event, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wayman D. Palmer YMCA, 2053 N. 14th St., will offer sports physicals, wellness checks, dental consultations, and vision tests.
Mobile Meals Christmas in July pet photo fund-raiser celebrated
People can get pictures of their pets with “Summer” Santa Dave this Saturday as part of Mobile Meals annual Christmas in July fund-raiser. For a $10 donation to Mobile Meals, participants will receive a framed print of their furry family member with Santa Dave. In addition to dogs and cats, over the years Santa Dave has had his picture taken with all kinds of pets, including snakes, ducks, and even an alligator. To help raise money for Mobile Meals, for pet-less people, Santa Dave will also pose for photos with kids. The photo fund-raiser will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Endless Pets & Supplies at 1546 W. Sylvania Ave. Mobile Meals of Toledo helps those needing assistance with diet and meal preparation, regardless of income, so they can remain in their homes and retain the independence they cherish. Mobile Meals Pet Food Program was established in 2007 after it was discovered that many clients shared their home-delivered meals with their pets.

High school rowing coaches see growth opportunity as University of Toledo adds team
Mike Dibling, chair of the Toledo Rowing Foundation, had two daughters who rowed at a high level. With no Division I rowing programs in the area, they went to West Virginia University. In a news conference announcing that the University of Toledo is adding varsity women’s rowing for the 2025-26 season, Athletic Director Bryan Blair explained that he viewed the program as a way of creating opportunities that did not exist for Dibling’s daughters. “When you think about your daughters rowing here on the Maumee, they went on to row collegiately,” he told Dibling. “And now just having the opportunity for [girls like] them to stay right at home and have an education at the University of Toledo, but also be a division one rower and champion, that’s what really excites me.”

Library offers delivery service for individuals medically unable to visit
The Toledo Lucas County Public Library is offering a home delivery service for Lucas County residents who are physically unable to visit the Library due to a medical reason. The home delivery service offers delivery and pickup of materials throughout the county. Library staff will select materials based upon the individual’s interests or requests and bring them to their door every four weeks. The service is currently used by 143 people. Patrons can request and receive a wide range of materials, including books, DVDs, audiobooks, and more without leaving the comfort of their homes. The initiative is “part of the Library's ongoing commitment to meeting the diverse needs of its users and ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need for learning, entertainment, and personal enrichment,” officials said.

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's and women's cross country programs have unveiled their 2024 schedules, Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Andrea Grove-McDonough announced on Friday. The 2024 schedule includes five regular-season meets in the lead-up to the Mid-American Conference Championships and the NCAA Championships.
