An Ottawa Lake woman is raising money for a pizzeria that will provide jobs for those with disabilities. Alicia LaZette, a former special education teacher, has her sights set on opening Rebel Pizza and Brews in downtown Monroe. She has set up a GoFundMe to cover essential startup costs. Her goal is to raise $2,800; she has raised $206 as of Wednesday, Nov. 4. More: Ralph Mahalak Jr. to be honored at Scouting dinner "There is a real need for this in my community," she wrote on the GoFundMe page. "If we can open in the next 6 to 9 months, this project could create about 15 to 20 full- and part-time positions." LaZette spent 10 years as a special education teacher, helping those with disabilities to learn job and life skills. When she moved to the Monroe area three years ago, she found that opportunities were scarce for her students. Briggs: Our updated ranking of the MAC's best football stadiums
SACRAMENTO — Some people climb mountains. Others sail the seven seas or visit the Seven Wonders. I go to Mid-American Conference football stadiums. With my trip last week to cover Toledo at Sacramento State, I’ve now checked all 13 current venues off the bucket list I didn’t know I had. So, naturally, it’s time to revisit our rankings. Borrowing from our list a few years ago, here goes, the top places to watch a football game in the MAC: 1. Glass Bowl, Toledo (capacity: 26,038, opened 1936): Call it a hometown pick, but most MAC coaches, players, and fans would agree. Built as a Works Progress Administration project, the Glass Bowl is an enduring classic. Simply, it’s the one MAC venue that has a big-time feel, from the enclosed horseshoe seating bowl to the three-story tower of suites that wouldn’t be out of place in the Big Ten. 2. Waldo Stadium, Western Michigan (30,200, 1939): Where’s Waldo? Right near the top of our list. I like everything about the place. The hillside setting. The seats on all four sides. The trains rumbling past during games. The horse leading the Broncos onto the field. Throw in Kalamazoo's brewery scene, and you

Sarnie's Deli shines with delicious takeout
Sarnie’s Deli & Pantry in downtown Toledo is set up perfectly as a lunch spot, with a menu full of sandwiches and salads. According to its Facebook page, the bread is baked daily, the salads and sauces are made using local ingredients, and the cookies are baked from scratch. The attention to quality was noticeable during our visits, with everything tasting fresh and well-made. It’s a newer restaurant in the downtown area, but based on our experiences, we hope it sticks around for a long time. Sarnie’s Deli & Pantry ★★★★ Address: 614 Adams St. Phone: 419-654-6655 Category: Dine-in/takeout Hours: 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday Wheelchair access: Yes Average price: $-$$ Credit cards: MC, V, D, AE Website: facebook.com/SarniesDowntown The first thing we tried was Turkey Avocado ($12), with in-house roasted turkey, avocado, muenster cheese, and pesto mayo on sourdough. It was generously sized, the bread was grilled to perfection, and the toppings were bursting out the sides. We also had Sarnies Chicken Cutlet Caesar ($14), which comes with Sarnies cajun-seasoned chicken cutlet, chopped Romaine lettuce, and Caesar dressing on a hoagie roll. It was excellent — the chicken cutlet was giant, juicy, and seasoned wonderfully, the lettuce was

Old West End shooting lawsuit may be just the beginning, lawyers say
Lawyers for the man suing the city of Toledo and Lucas County for wrongful arrest after the Old West End Festival shooting said Thursday they have now heard from others alleging wrongful prosecutions in Toledo. Alex Bodiford, the Akron-based lawyer representing Eljay Crisp-Carr, said during a news conference on the Lucas County Courthouse steps that one goal of the $20 million federal lawsuit Crisp-Carr and his mother filed Wednesday is to stop what they believe is a pattern of civil-rights violations by Toledo police and the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office. “We want to make sure this egregious behavior doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Mr. Bodiford said. Crisp-Carr and his mother, April Carr, stood quietly flanking the lawyers, with Ms. Carr speaking only to confirm that the red tracksuit her son wore during the news conference was the same outfit he wore June 6 when his truck broke down in the 2000 block of Glenwood Avenue. Mr. Bodiford said that of those who had contacted his office between the lawsuit’s filing Wednesday and the noontime event Thursday, “some we deem very credible” and further investigation is warranted. It is likely that some of them will either join Crisp-Carr’s lawsuit as additional
