Life in Reynolds Corners grows with community
This year, The Blade interns explored a variety of Toledo's neighborhoods. The following ongoing series highlights those communities. Phil Bayer’s hardware store has been in Reynolds Corners for a long time — so long, in fact, that Mr. Bayer is flabbergasted that there are people in the neighborhood who don’t know about his shop. “How the heck do you not know that?” he said, standing behind the cash register, framed by a huge piece of plexiglass and dangling highlighter pen packs. Bayer Hardware opened in 1929, back when the area was in Adams Township. The shop’s at an intersection at the heart of the neighborhood, Reynolds Road and Dorr Street. Joining the city of Toledo in 1966, Mr. Bayer said, brought “more people, more businesses, and bigger highways.” In the last few decades, local businesses have been closing down — but not Bayer Hardware.

Editorial: Moratorium protects retail
Maumee City Council’s action in imposing a two-year moratorium on “discount” and “liquidation” stores is a reasonable step aimed at reining in destructive retail competition. Retail is in trouble, and discount stores in a community with an existing variety of stores that offer a wide and deep range of groceries and other products — e.g., Kroger and Meijer — portend a race to the bottom. It was not that long ago that Maumee also had The Andersons general store, one of the most beloved retail stores in the area. Maumee still has the Shops at Fallen Timbers, as well. Monday Memories: Ice menorah was a beacon of light in 1999
The Chabad House of Toledo presented an elaborate ice menorah sculpted by Chad Hartson of Ice Creations for its 1999 Chanukah at the Mall celebration. In this Blade Archive photo Joel Beren, president of the Jewish Federation, lights the 700-pound sculpture during a holiday celebration at the J. C. Penny Court at the Franklin Park Mall. Chanukah is an eight-day festival of the lights, commemorating the miracle of the oil in the second century BCE. A day’s supply of oil kept the temple light in Jerusalem burning eight days, until pure oil could be prepared. This year, Chanukah begins at sundown Thursday, marked by the 36th annual menorah lighting at the Franklin Park Mall. An ice menorah will be lit on Sunday during Chanukah on Ice at The Ribbon at Glass City Metropark from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Go to thebladevault.com/memories to purchase more historical photos taken by our award-winning staff of photographers, past and present, or to purchase combinations of stories and photos.
