City proposes median, roundabout for Secor
Physically blocking most left turns and all cross traffic with a median divider while providing wider lanes is how Toledo officials propose to reduce crashes on a trouble-prone stretch of Secor Road between Central Avenue and Kenwood Boulevard. The Toledo Department of Transportation plans to formally unveil the proposal Thursday evening during an open house meeting at the Toledo Lucas County Public Library’s Sanger Branch. The proposal also calls for a new roundabout at Secor and Kenwood, replacing a traffic light there. Doug Stephens, the transportation department’s director, said the 10-foot median, pavement widening of six feet, and a multi-use path along Secor’s west side all can be done within the existing Secor right-of-way. Some partial, triangular land takes will be needed to build the roundabout at Kenwood, he said.
Alice in MOMIX-land: dance company brings surreal take to the Stranahan
Dance and dreams will blur together with MOMIX’s Alice at the Stranahan Theater this Tuesday. The latest creation of famed choreographer Moses Pendleton, Alice is a “rabbit hole that we invite everybody to jump into,” he said. “An escape from the realities of the real world into something that is more dreamlike and surreal.” MOMIX, a dance company founded by Pendleton, has performed on stages throughout five continents since its 1981 formation. Billed as dancer-illusionists, MOMIX performers use an interplay of lighting, props, the human body, visual physical theater, and music to create a dynamic production unlike anything audiences have seen before, Pendleton said.
Murder trial witness describes boys' beatings before they vanished
A friend who was present when two boys were beaten in a South Toledo home’s basement before their disappearances and deaths in late 2022 described those beatings in court Tuesday. Patrick Yingling, Jr.’s testimony followed that of Dr. Jeffrey Hudson, deputy Lucas County coroner, in the trial of Brent Kohlhofer, 42, and Charles Walker, 34, who are charged with two counts each of aggravated murder, murder, and kidnapping. Dr. Hudson, said the lacerations, swelling, and other blunt-force injuries he saw on the heads of Ke’Marion Wilder, 16, and Kyshawn Pittman, 15, were not enough to have caused death. He also testified that only young Wilder had injuries consistent with strangulation to include in his autopsy reports. Still, Dr. Hudson said in Lucas County Common Pleas Court, what was known of young Pittman’s death — his body having been found in a burned-out house’s basement alongside young Wilder’s — was sufficient to rule its manner a homicide even if the cause could only be narrowed to “homicide by unspecified means.”

The Lucas County auditor presented a check to SeaGate Food Bank on Wednesday, based on a settlement secured by the Office of the Ohio Attorney General against Family Dollar. Auditor Katie Moline presented the food bank with $7,339.08, the result of a lawsuit filed by the attorney general’s office against Dollar General and Family Dollar for charging customers one price on the shelf and a higher one at the counter. Settlements in each lawsuit were used to donate money to auditor-selected food pantries, with county distributions based on the total settlement amount and the number of stores located in the county, the Lucas County Auditor’s Office said in a news release. “Seagate Food Bank of Northwest Ohio fights against hunger in Lucas County daily,” Ms. Moline said. “I am honored to direct these funds to SeaGate Food Bank, as a result of the work performed by the Auditor’s office to ensure fair and honest pricing in our community.”
