Prince funked out Ohio in this 1983 concert
It’s rare that I get jealous, but it happens. I’m super jealous of anybody who got to see Prince in the 1980’s, especially the early ‘80’s. I’m wildly envious of anyone who saw him in Ohio. His Purple Badness put on a show in Toledo, Ohio on February 26, 1983. From listening to it, he did his usual amazing job of performing live (Prince was known as a legendary live performer). He was in the Glass City because it was a stop for his 1999 Tour. In the show, he played a combo of songs mainly from two of his early ‘80’s albums: Controversy and 1999. The 1999 album, which was released on October 27th, 1982, was a big deal by the time this concert hit Toledo, which meant this show had to be a hot ticket.

Basil excels when sticking to pizzas
Basil Pizza & Wine Bar at Levis Commons presents a menu of uniquely curated specialty pizzas along with a number of other Italian-inspired pasta, seafood, and other upscale dishes. The servers accommodated the gluten-free needs of one of my dining companions, and the menu also extends several vegan options. We started off our meal with the sweet-and-savory goat cheese al forno ($13), which was a delightful, bubbling blend of cheese with caramelized onions and balsamic glaze, served with naan bread and jam. We got a second plate of gluten-free bread for an additional $2, which was crispier than the naan, but we agreed it tasted great — a feat when it comes to gluten-free breads. We selected two pizzas to compare the different crusts: the regular was light and fluffy while the gluten-free was so crisp that it was difficult to cut and hurt our jaws to chew. If it was a dinner roll, my friend said she would’ve been pleased. But because it was for pizza, she ranked this lower than she wanted to on her list of quality gluten-free crusts.
Family hits the hot spot in glassblowing
Hawk Galleries in Columbus is celebrating a Toledo family's legacy etched in glass. It is the story of two boys growing up in their parents' glass studio knowing that the throwing of balls absolutely must be done outside. Zach Schmidt became a graphic designer, and his brother, Ian, followed his parents, Shawn Messenger and Jack Schmidt, of Schmidt Messenger Studios, into the sandblasted path of their craft. “Wherever Ian ends up, he seems to find a glass studio,” Jack Schmidt, 78, said. Ian Schmidt is the creative director of glass and ceramics programs at the Workhouse Arts Center, a not-for-profit craft center, in Lorton, Va. His work, taking on the textures, forms, and colors from the natural world, and that of his parents can be viewed closer to home in A Family Legacy in Glass which is on view through April 27, at Hawk Galleries, 153 E. Main St. in Columbus.
