The ballpark has a lot more to offer nowadays than the classic hot dog with a mountain of ketchup and mustard — Fifth Third Field is gearing up for Mud Hens opening weekend with the addition of a Glass City Cheesesteak Dog, a Pretzel Pizza Dog, and so much more. The Mud Hens’ first home game of the season begins Friday at 4:05 p.m. against the Nashville Sounds, and the stadium’s hospitality team is ready to serve guests its newly developed menu items. Corey Pleasant, the team’s food and beverage director, said out of the seven new food offerings, one he’s most excited about is the Glass City Cheesesteak Dog. “We’ve always had Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, but the pairing on top of a hot dog, you can’t beat that,” Pleasant said at a preview event held for the new menu items earlier this month. “It’s like two meals in one almost.”
Whitmer's West repeats on Division I All-Ohio basketball first team
After leading his Whitmer team to its first Division I state final four appearance in 12 years, Panthers junior Antione West repeated as a first team selection on the All-Ohio high school boys basketball teams released Thursday by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. West, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 19.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists during the regular season for seventh-ranked Whitmer (25-3), which lost to Centerville in last Saturday's D-I state semifinals. He was also chosen to the D-I first team last season, when he averaged 21.5 points per game, and received special-mention All-Ohio recognition as a freshman in 2022. Selected to the D-I All-Ohio second team was Findlay's 6-1 senior guard Javonte Hill, who led the fifth-ranked 21-3 Trojans to a Northern Lakes League Buckeye Division title (7-1), averaging 18.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists.
2024 local CHSL baseball preview: Toledo trio to take on challenge in new league
Toledo's three Catholic high school baseball teams will embark on a new journey in 2024, competing in the Michigan-based Catholic High School League's Central Division. Central Catholic, St. Francis de Sales, and St. John's Jesuit will join with six Detroit-area teams – Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice, Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, Novi Detroit Catholic Central, Warren De La Salle, Orchard Lake St. Mary's, and University of Detroit Jesuit in an unbalanced division schedule and subsequently a single-elimination championship playoff May 8-10. The three Toledo teams, each former members of the now-defunct Three Rivers Athletic Conference, will play each other three times in division play, and will play the Detroit-area teams once each for a total of 12 Central Division games The Detroit-area teams will face each other twice each and the Toledo teams once each for 13 Central Division games.
TAAC standouts Butler, Miles III named first team All-Ohio
Kalon Butler of top-ranked Toledo Christian was chosen to the first team in Division IV, and Nate Miles III of fourth-ranked Emmanuel Christian was named to the first team in Division III, on the All-Ohio high school boys basketball teams released Wednesday by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Butler, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game during the regular season for the Eagles (21-1, 9-1), who were Toledo Area Athletic Conference outright champions, ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press state poll, and advanced to the D-IV regional finals before ending at 26-2. Miles, a 6-5 sophomore guard-forward, averaged 24.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists during the regular season for the TAAC-runner-up Warriors (19-3, 8-2). Emmanuel ended 22-4 with a loss to top-ranked Ottawa-Glandorf in a D-III regional semifinal, and Miles was named TAAC player of the year. The All-Ohio teams were selected by a media panel representing the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.
