DEARBORN — Luke Bruggeman’s jersey told the story. The royal blue No. 7 on the back of his jersey was practically illegible, with the lettering and a significant portion of the fabric ripped loose. Bruggeman’s undershirt didn’t fare much better as a sizeable hole tore through the fabric on the upper half of his left sleeve. The jersey was battered. So were the Maples. Adrian wrapped up its 2026 season Friday night with a 49-14 loss to Divine Child in the MHSAA Division 4 district finals. The reigning state champion Falcons put the game out of reach early and took a 42-0 lead into halftime. Divine Child’s dynamic duo of quarterback Drew Sheridan and wide receiver Rayshawn Thomas plagued the Maples from the opening drive. Adrian had no answers for the Falcons’ potent passing attack. Offensively, Adrian struggled with Divine Child’s speed and size at the line of scrimmage. The Maples didn’t record a first down until the third quarter. Bruggeman failed to score a touchdown and was held under 100 yards for the first time this season. Adrian’s special teams struggled, too. School tax votes split: Cuts loom for two districts
Maumee and Springfield schools are bracing for major budget cuts after voters rejected proposed income taxes Tuesday, while voters in Toledo and Sylvania approved additional funding for their school districts. In October, Springfield Superintendent Matt Geha told members of the board of education the district would have to cut $500,000 from the budget even if the income tax measure passed. He warned that number could rise to $2.5 million if it failed. Issue 6, the 0.5 percent income tax for Springfield schools, lost by 589 votes, with 6,518 votes against and 5,929 votes in favor. Mr. Geha said he was still trying to calm down and regroup after the levy defeat. “We will have to decide on the cuts we need to make for fall of 2027,” Mr. Geha said. “This is going to mean reduced opportunities for kids and a reduced number of adults in the buildings. There will be job cuts, and all of these things are going to be painful.” Mr. Geha said cuts are coming regardless of whether the school board decides to put a levy on the May ballot. “Even if we pass a levy, then it would not help us now,” he said. “The

UT to complete Swan Creek project with Great Lakes Commission grant
The University of Toledo has received another $897,557 from the Ann Arbor-based Great Lakes Commission to finish a nearly $1.2 million restoration project along Swan Creek on land the university owns north of its Health Science campus. University officials said crews will soon begin clearing trees and building an access route to reach 1,700 linear feet of the creek. The route runs through the property of neighboring ALRO Steel, which has granted access. Work along that section of Swan Creek began in 2023 after the commission allocated $242,000. The project is a small part of a much larger effort to restore the Maumee River, the Ottawa River, Swan Creek, and other Toledo-area waterways as part of a U.S.-Canada agreement made in 1987 to improve 43 areas of concern across the Great Lakes region.

On November 30, 1996, Lima Senior High School defeated five-time defending state champion Cleveland St. Ignatius, 38-30 to win the Division 1 state football championship - the first state title in school history. Monday at Rotary, linebacker coach Frank Crea and players Jim Morris, Jair Torres and Jim Barker reminisced about the game.
