GoFundMe set up for Monroe inclusive pizzeria

An Ottawa Lake woman is raising money for a pizzeria that will provide jobs for those with disabilities. Alicia LaZette, a former special education teacher, has her sights set on opening Rebel Pizza and Brews in downtown Monroe. She has set up a GoFundMe to cover essential startup costs. Her goal is to raise $2,800; she has raised $206 as of Wednesday, Nov. 4. More: Ralph Mahalak Jr. to be honored at Scouting dinner "There is a real need for this in my community," she wrote on the GoFundMe page. "If we can open in the next 6 to 9 months, this project could create about 15 to 20 full- and part-time positions." LaZette spent 10 years as a special education teacher, helping those with disabilities to learn job and life skills. When she moved to the Monroe area three years ago, she found that opportunities were scarce for her students. "So, I knew I wanted to do something, and I knew I wanted to do something that kind of stood out against the grain, and for some reason, pizza and beer just stuck in my head," she previously said. Who makes Birmingham's best burger? Winners revealed

For the second year in a row, diners crowned Terra Kitchen & Cocktails as the winner of Birmingham’s third annual burger competition. It was a close competition, Birmingham Shopping District officials and organizers of the event said. Overall, nearly 10,000 votes came in. Terra Kitchen & Cocktails’ Michigan Reserve burger garnered the highest combined rating and votes from diners, earning the restaurant Birmingham Best Burger title of the third annual event. The eatery’s Michigan Reserve burger is a 45-day house-ground, dry-aged beef blend with cherry wood-smoked pork belly, aged Michigan cheddar, Guernsey buttermilk crispy onions, dressed arugula, savory bourbon cherry jus, Traverse City cherry and a Mammoth Bourbon toasted sesame bun served with steakhouse potato wedges. Randy Foumia, owner of Terra Kitchen & Cocktails, said in a news release that participating was a “fun way to connect with the community and introduce new guests to Terra.” “Winning for the second year in a row speaks to our team's consistency and the incredible support of our guests,” Foumia said. Michigan's senator-elect, Abdul El-Sayed, this week joked that he is for "shawarma" not "Sharia" law, when speaking to reporters this week. "Do not believe the people who say I'm for Sharia law, I'm for shawarma law," El-Sayed said at a campaign stop in Macomb County. The joke made light of those who are concerned that El-Sayed, the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate, will force all Americans to adhere to the religious concepts of Islam, an accusation he has denied.
