McKenzie Pass gates are shut — and won’t reopen until spring
BEND, Ore. -- Highway 242 that takes drivers over McKenzie Pass in Central Oregon is closed for the winter season. The Oregon Department of Transportation closed the gates Thursday, Nov. 5, on the scenic highway. ODOT says it does not maintain the route during winter due to weather, cost and logistics. It focuses more on more heavily-traveled routes.

A lowly curb: More than you want to know

I don’t even remember being aware of when that curb between the street and the railroad track appeared. Who cares about or notices something as mundane as a curb?

The city does not have a timeline for funding or installing cameras. City staff are surveying both City Council members and the community. The city's survey is available at surveymonkey.com/r/eug_safetycameras “We’re still early in the process, and there are many steps ahead before a program like this could implemented,” Logan Telles, transportation planner for City of Eugene Public Works Engineering, said in the announcement. Eugene City Council is scheduled to discuss the proposal at its Nov. 18 meeting. In a video announcing the survey , Telles said red light cameras have been used in other Oregon cities since the 1990s. Salem first implemented red light cameras in 2008 and added speed cameras in 2019 . In 2025 ,
