Seniors key to Anthony Wayne's run to state softball semifinals
As Anthony Wayne High School heads to its third Division I state softball final four on Friday, the Generals will be bidding farewell to a group of senior players who have been part of the best four-year run in program history. Third-ranked Anthony Wayne will take a 29-1 overall record into Friday's D-I state semifinal matchup against second-ranked Pataskala Watkins Memorial (30-1) at Firestone Stadium in Akron at 5:30 p.m. That mark by the Generals, which included a perfect 14-0 Northern Lakes League record, is part of a four-year AW record of 114-12 overall and 50-6 in the highly-competitive NLL. The only season AW did not reach the final four since 2021 came in 2022, when a top-ranked Generals squad finished 30-1 with a 5-4 regional semifinal loss to NLL rival Springfield, which finished as D-I state runner-up that year.
Perrysburg claims Division I regional title with 8-2 win over Lakewood St. Edward
GATES MILLS, Ohio — The Perrysburg baseball team saw its bats come alive in the third and fourth innings of its Division I regional final against Lakewood St. Edward and rode the relief pitching of sophomore Tyler Palmer the rest of the way in an 8-2 win Friday at Gates Mills Gilmour Academy. The Yellow Jackets fell behind 2-0 midway through the third inning but plated three in the third and five in the fourth to break open the game. Palmer shut things down the rest of the way with four perfect innings, backing up starter Parker Faris to send Perrysburg to a state semifinal berth. “It's been 13 years since we got to back to state, and we didn't know if we'd get back there,” Perrysburg coach Dave Hall said. “These kids have been tough all year, and we're playing good at the right time They play as a team, and they really like each other. There's no ‘I’, it's all about the team. We're playing about 10 kids at this point and there are 12 guys going nuts for them. We've had great pitching, and they are just picking each other up right now.”
