Man convicted in killing of girlfriend's former beau gets early release
A Toledo man convicted two years ago of involuntary manslaughter for the shooting death of his then-girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend was released from prison more than a year early Wednesday morning by a Lucas County judge. Kedontae Colter, 24, was originally charged with murder for the August, 2021, death of Daryl Foster III, but under a plea bargain he agreed to enter an Alford plea to the lesser charge, and four other counts were dropped. Including a one-year gun specification, he was sentenced to four years in prison, and with 10½ months time served and good-behavior credit he was due for release July 31, 2025. Judge Stacy Cook placed Colter on five years’ supervised release during which he is not to possess firearms or ammunition, stay clean of intoxicants, and be gainfully employed while completing a graduation-equivalency diploma program. She also ordered him to post nothing on Facebook or other social media “that can be gleaned to be negative or disrespectful toward the victim.” The decision to release Colter did not sit well with relatives of Mr. Foster in attendance Wednesday.

Connecting Uptown and Junction neighborhoods to be supported by new infrastructure
Work to connect the Junction and Uptown neighborhoods will begin in 2027 with infrastructure projects, thanks to a $20 million grant the city of Toledo received from the U.S. Department of Transportation, city administrators shared with council. The project aims to upgrade the infrastructure as part of the development of an innovation district, which will accelerate job creation, investment, and work force development and bring equitable, broad-based economic opportunity to one of Toledo’s most disadvantaged areas. “First and foremost, we’re trying to create an innovation district in the Uptown area, and we’re investing in the infrastructure in the neighborhoods to support the investment,” Brandon Sehlhorst, director of the city’s department of economic development, said at a council meeting Tuesday. “Secondly, with this grant, we are trying to better connect the neighborhoods around the innovation district through multimodal transportation.” Those neighborhoods were cut off from one another by I-75 overpasses that have minimal pedestrian facilities and bicycle accommodations.

Drive-in theater reopening as the Sundance for 2024 season
One of the last remaining drive-in movie theaters in northwest Ohio will reopen on May 1 once again as the Sundance Drive-In for its 75th year of operation. Located at 4500 Navarre Ave. in Oregon, the theater operated as the Parkside Drive-In last year by the nonprofit management group Save Our Screens. Earlier this month, however, Parkside posted a statement on their website saying they would not reopen the Parkside for the 2024 season, citing “many challenges including an inherited and growing list of repairs,” and unspecified “costly ongoing litigation with the previous operator we had naively called our friend.” According to a Facebook post that appeared Saturday on the Sundance Drive-In page which had been mostly dormant for the past two years, Todd Williams, owner of the Memory Lane Drive-In in Monroe, has now acquired the Sundance. Previous Sundance theater operators Keven and Sue Christy will help manage the theater with Williams.

Melissa Stock was all smiles with tears of joy when she received the key to a brand-new Oregon home Wednesday. That’s not before the single mother of two had volunteered about 15 hours a month during the past two years to help build homes for would-be homeowners in need of assistance. “I am excited and happy. It was a long time coming, so I am overwhelmed with happiness,” Ms. Stock, 39, said, speaking in an interview at the dedication of the house in the 300 block of Van Buren Avenue. About 40 attended the event, including her 12-year-old daughter, Kyla St. Claire, and an 8-year-old son, Keagen St. Claire. The $147,000 three-bedroom 1½-bathroom house was built through a Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity project by people like her who volunteered “sweat equity hours” with help from volunteers from Mercy Health and Toledo Refining Co.
Ex-deputy charged with misdemeanor for kicking teen suspect at mall
A former Lucas County sheriff’s deputy who was seen on camera kicking a downed, teenage suspect outside Franklin Park Mall last year has been indicted for misdemeanor assault. The Lucas County grand jury Tuesday charged David Terry of Rossford with three counts of assault for the incident involving Anthony Wilder, then 17, who he and another officer working security at the mall’s Cinemark movie theaters had chased after observing him carrying a gun. The grand jury cleared Mr. Terry of second-degree felonious assault, for which it did not find probable cause to charge him. The deputies had gone to the mall’s Forever 21 store after receiving a report of a menacing situation involving three juveniles, according to a sheriff’s report. Wilder fled to the upper level of the mall’s parking garage, where the deputies closed in on him with Tasers drawn.
