Eugene eyes red-light, speed cameras to curb fatal crashes

Traffic and red-light cameras could be coming to Eugene's streets. Despite public backlash surrounding Flock cameras , the Eugene Public Works Department announced Nov. 4 it will collect feedback about whether cameras tied to traffic enforcement can reduce traffic deaths. City officials said cameras could reduce fatal crashes in Eugene if they are installed at high-crash intersections. Eugene Public Works employees said between 2020 and 2024, red-light violations and speeding caused 81 crashes that either killed or seriously injured people in Eugene. The city does not have a timeline for funding or installing cameras. City staff are surveying both City Council members and the community. The city's survey is available at surveymonkey.com/r/eug_safetycameras “We’re still early in the process, and there are many steps ahead before a program like this could implemented,” Logan Telles, transportation planner for City of Eugene Public Works Engineering, said in the announcement. Eugene City Council is scheduled to discuss the proposal at its Nov. 18 meeting. Interstate Bridge Replacement as a Tunnel: Totally Doable

This is an alternative to the Columbia River Crossing / Interstate Bridge Replacement (IBR) Project based on an immersed tube tunnel (ITT). The IBR proponents have been against using an ITT, and I will address their concerns at the end. The principal advantages of a tunnel are that it frees up land, leaves nothing in the water that impedes river traffic, and leaves nothing in the air that impedes air traffic. (For those not familiar, one reason that the IBR is a hot mess is that it needs to be high enough to allow for barge traffic but low enough to not intrude into approach routes to the airport. It is still high enough off the ground at either side of the river to demand huge disruptive interchanges on the waterfront.)
