Registration open for OSU Coos County Master Gardner training

The Coos County Extension Service is offering a 6-week Master Gardener training course beginning January 14, 2027. Master Gardeners are volunteer educators who share safe, effective gardening practices with the community through Plant Clinics, garden seminars and involvement in plant sales and community booths. Training for the program comes through OSU professionals and local experts who offer research-based information to help gardeners, or just starting out gardeners, increase their gardening enjoyment and knowledge. On the agenda are classes on soils, pesticide safety, plant diseases, botany, entomology, bees, and much more. Training participants will receive a copy of Sustainable Gardening: the Oregon and Washington Master Gardener Handbook, plus detailed handouts. To become an OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteer, participants must attend all the training sessions, pass an open-book exam, and volunteer 40 hours of service to the community from mid-February through the end of October. Cost of the 6-week training is $150 if registering prior to December 1st, after the cost will go up to $175, $50 of which is refunded upon completion of the program requirements. All of the courses will be held at the Extension Service office in Myrtle Point. Classes are held every Thursday, from 9 am to

Southern Oregon’s Private Wells Put Drinking Water Safety in Homeowners’ Hands

East of Sutherlin, in the Nonpareil and Hinkle Creek areas of Douglas County, naturally occurring arsenic has been found at elevated levels in well water. The affected areas are among the places where Oregon health officials have urged households to test the water they drink. A glass drawn from a kitchen tap can look and taste as it always has, even when arsenic is present.

Editor's Note: From Nate Schwartz

It is with a tinge of mourning, but also a great deal of hope, that I write to our readers today and say thank you. This will be my last edition as editor of the Coos Bay World and it has been an invaluable experience. I started as a beat reporter 3 years ago, moving to the South Coast with no prior knowledge of the area or contacts here to lean on. In those three years, folks from all facets of life in Coos County have welcomed me warmly. I’ve seen the character and constitution that define its people, seen the way that practical, common-sense solutions and accountability mean so much more than party lines and petty squabbles. It has been my honor to watch the community rally around its objectives, which leaves me with nothing but confidence that the tide will turn for the South Coast. There are countless passionate people working their absolute tails off to make that happen. It has been an honor to have any small part in that march toward the horizon. To all the lawmakers, business owners, tribal representatives, volunteers, and everyday people that gave me access, opened doors and made me feel at

ODOT closing Coquille office, consolidating staff in Coos Bay

The Oregon Department of Transportation is closing its Coquille office and moving the staff to Coos Bay in December. The building at 307 Highway 42E is for sale. The owner, VPC Inc. of Eugene, has listed the three-quarter-acre property and building for sale with Pacific Properties. Julie Denney, public information officer in ODOT’s Southwest Regional Office, said the agency decided not to renew its lease for the building, which it has occupied since the 1990s. “Cutting the lease and utilities will create a savings of approximately $9,800 monthly, or $235,200 per biennium, from our regional budget,” she said. “We do not yet have a hard move-in date for our workers in Coos Bay. We will be vacating the Coquille office sometime after Dec. 9 and our lease will expire at the end of the year.” Denney said the Coquille office has about 13 employees, but generates little walk-in business. “It supports employees like construction inspectors and others who do not often work with the general public,” she said. “Most of our services are provided in the field, by phone or online.” Chris Hunter, ODOT area manager in Roseburg, said maintaining its presence in Coquille just didn’t pencil out. “We looked

COOS COUNTY, Ore. – The estate of a 5-year-old Coos County boy who died of hypothermia just a week before his birthday has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Oregon Department of Human Services and the boy’s mother. Fifty-one Oregon high schools, consortia, and education service districts (ESDs) serving more than 20,000 students received career readiness grants to create or expand Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, Oregon Department of Education Director Dr. Charlene Williams and Labor Commissioner Christina Stephenson announced today. These programs give students opportunities to gain hands-on experience, connect classroom learning to real-world applications, and prepare for careers and postsecondary education. They also strengthen connections among schools, employers, and communities to help meet Oregon’s workforce needs. The Coquille School District will be receiving $115,464.59 of the overall grant for a barn equipment project at the Junior and Senior High School. “The CTE Revitalization Grant Program recognizes the power of bringing education, innovation, and initiative together,” said ODE Director Dr. Charlene Williams. “These projects give students practical, real-world learning experiences that help them connect what they learn in the classroom to the careers and opportunities ahead. Springfield approves stabilization center and mental hospital

Springfield City Council approved Lane County and PeaceHealth's request to annex the north Springfield property where the entities want to build a combined mental health stabilization center and hospital . Springfield City Council began to deliberate on the request in May. Last month, City Councilors said they had three remaining questions : whether the mental health facilities were compatible with the nearby light-industrial businesses, whether they would create a traffic problem and whether they would burden police and emergency medical services. On Nov. 2, in a 5-0 vote, Councilors said those answers favored moving the proposal forward. In the city's written opinion , councilors determined fears that the mental health facilities would harm nearby businesses "arise from subjective beliefs or perceptions about the mental health conditions of patients at these facilities" not "evidence in the record" and the county and PeaceHealth's proposal adequately addressed traffic impacts. City Council addressed the concern over police resources by adding a condition to the annexation agreement. The new agreement requires the county and PeaceHealth to establish a Memorandum of Understanding with Springfield Police outlining procedures for serious security or safety incidents. Springfield staff said such an MOU would likely be similar to the existing
