Gwen's Homestyle Kitchen brings soul food to Eugene
Chef Distro remembers the first meal he made for himself. He was 6 years old, and his mom was going out for the night. She told him to fix his own dinner. "I cooked some pancakes and eggs, and I fried some mush meat in the pan, and then I had some cookies," he said. "I made that all for myself, and after that, I just never stopped doing it." Born in Milwaukee, Distro was raised in Chicago and Florida. He started his first kitchen job at 14, working at Boston Market, a chicken chain on the East Coast. He continued to work there on and off until he was 21. Then Distro worked as a traveling chef for NASCAR in Daytona before diving into the world of fine dining in Chicago. Before he moved to Eugene, he was working at a Michelin-recommended breakfast restaurant called Jam, and had been in the food industry for 15 years. "I also did some culinary school, but I don't really think that did much for me," he said. "I made my first meals for myself out of necessity, and I've always loved food, so I've always been in the kitchen." Distro moved to

Springfield's coffee lovers get new options at recently opened stands
In the mood for caffeine? You're in luck. Two new coffee stands have arrived in Springfield, offering a fresh option for your daily fix. South Valley Coffee opened near downtown Springfield in Off-Kilter Koffee's former location, and offers creative spins on espresso drinks and monthly specials. Register-Guard readers might already be familiar with Native Coffee , a local string of stands that have popped up over the past year. Owner Gavin Burkhead opened a third store in fall 2025, slowly expanding his hyper-local empire of high-quality drinks across town. A new food truck, Gwen's Homestyle Kitchen , is putting the finishing touches on business as well. The truck soft opened in late February, and owner and operator Chef Distro plans to announce regular hours soon. Distro cooks "the best soul food in Oregon," and can't wait to turn the people of Eugene on to his cuisine. South Valley Coffee opens on A Street Corinne Blankenship gets to see a beautiful sunrise every day.
