Oakland Police Want Drones Racing to 911 Calls Before Officers Arrive
Oakland police want to put six drones on rooftops at three locations around the city, launching them straight into 911 calls before patrol officers ever leave the curb. The department says the drones would be the first to arrive at many emergencies, feeding live video back to officers while they're still en route. The Police Commission has already signed off, but the plan still needs a vote from the Oakland City Council before it can take flight.

Anthropic is rapidly accelerating AI development amid CEO's call to slowdown, group says

An AI safety monitoring group has warned that Anthropic is developing its systems roughly twice as quickly as it was a year ago, even as the company's chief executive urges the wider industry to slow down. The analysis was released on Thursday by Model Evaluation and Threat Research, a nonprofit based in Berkeley, California, known as METR. Anthropic invited the group's researchers to review its internal data and interview staff ahead of a Wall Street debut that comes amid debate over whether AI models could elude human control with catastrophic consequences. Before the report, details about the technology and its risks have so far been provided primarily by AI companies themselves. Those companies have been encouraged by President Donald Trump's administration to police themselves on matters of safety. San Francisco-based Anthropic is planning to go public later this month in what could be the biggest initial public offering of stock ever. It did not immediately comment on the new report.
