Here are some of Portland’s leaders in the circle, at the plate and out...
Winterhawks fall in Game 5
PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - The Portland Winterhawks were defeated 6-1 by the Prince George Cougars on Thursday night in Game 5 of the WHL Western Conference Championship series. Red-hot to cold as ice, that’s the nature of the playoff hockey after peeling off three straight wins over Prince George. The top-seeded Cougars clawed back to starve off elimination in Game 5 against the U.S. Division Champion Hawks.
Newberg track and field's Sophia Castaneda named OSAA athlete of the week
Newberg track and field sophomore standout Sophia Castaneda was one of the four athletes awarded athlete of the week for April 22-28 by the OSAA. Castaneda ran the 400 meters in 54.96 seconds on April 24 at a Pacific Conference meet against Forest Grove and McMinnville. The time re-broke Castaneda's previous school record and slated her with the second-fastest time in the state this season, regardless of classification. The time also makes her the 12th fastest sophomore in the country. ...

Portland local, former Jefferson basketball star Victor Sanders a newly minted MVP in Poland league
In his first exhibition game as a pro overseas, Portland native Victor Sanders says he was tossed to the hardwood by a bigger basketball player from the famous Red Star club based in Belgrade, Serbia. “I tried to box out this guy and he threw me on the ground and that was the first wakeup call, was like, yea, that will never happen again,” said Sanders, who was then a rookie pro with a club in Belgium. “It pushed me to try and get stronger...
Hops look to salvage a split with Everett on Sunday, after 7-1 loss Saturday night
Miscues in the field and on the bases plagued Hillsboro (11-15) throughout the night as the AquaSox (10-16) prevailed 7-1 to take a three-game-to-two lead in their six game series on Saturday, May 4, in Everett. The Hops committed three errors and stranded six on base, and despite tallying eight hits, were able to push just one across. Everett scored three in the fourth inning, two of which came after...
‘That was just the start’: Winger Payton Linnehan another example of Portland Thorns’ embarrassment of riches
Sam Coffey glanced to her left, playfully prodding her teammate Payton Linnehan. The two sat shoulder-to-shoulder in the bowels of San Jose’s PayPal Park, hunched in close as to better allow the computer camera directly ahead to capture the both of them. Still donning their Portland Thorns uniforms, the duo took turns fielding questions from media in the immediate aftermath of the Thorns’ 3-2 win Wednesday night over Bay FC.
Portland Thorns stay hot, strike early, beat Washington Spirit
Rob Gale doesn’t want his Portland Thorns to think too much about soccer over the next couple of days. Portland’s interim coach might still be new to the sideline, but the 46-year-old Englishman has seen far too much in his life to fail to recognize a job well done. And after an eight-day stretch that saw the Thorns knock off Chicago on April 27, Bay FC on Wednesday and then the Washington Spirit 2-1 on Saturday night at Providence Park, well, Gale is fairly confident in his assessment that his squad has earned a few days of leisure.
West Linn baseball's Ryan VandenBrink is an embodiment of his long-time nickname
Current West Linn senior Ryan VandenBrink committed to extend his baseball career at Oregon State University before ever stepping foot on his high school’s campus as a student. The standout catcher, commonly referred to by his longtime nickname “RV,” was operating with so much horsepower as a middle-schooler, one of the top collegiate baseball programs in the country couldn’t resist. “It’s an awesome program,” VandenBrink said. “I actually committed there...
Buffalo girls pound out win over Molalla
A three-run sixth inning keyed the win for the Madras White Buffalo softball program Thursday, May 2. With the game tied at 3-all, Madras plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-3, then held on for the 6-4 Tri-Valley Conference victory over Molalla at the Buffalo field. Senior Keira Tortalita pitched all seven innings for Madras, spreading out eight Indian hits and striking out seven....
Sandy baseball’s Matthew Kosderka pitches shutout, hits winning home run
Sandy baseball won a back-and-forth pitching battle, not just on the mound but thanks to a deep shot homer from its star slinger. It helps when you’ve got the reigning Mt. Hood Conference pitcher of the year. Pioneers senior Matthew Kosderka lived up to his lofty billing on a rainy Friday afternoon, May 3, against visiting Clackamas. In seven innings he held the Cavaliers scoreless, thanks to some wicked tosses...
Portland's other Brink cutting down hitters as ace of Pilots baseball's pitching staff
A Portland-area native and standout college athlete leading their team as they chase a conference title with the last name Brink. Who comes to mind? If Cameron Brink, the former Stanford basketball player turned Los Angeles Spark in the WNBA came to mind, you'd technically be right. But the Rose City proved big enough for two Brinks — who are not related — to thrive, with Nick Brink of the University of Portland baseball team tearing it up on the Bluff as the ace of...
