He loved his wife, children, and grandchildren more than anything on this earth, and they were in his final thoughts. Ron was...

One downtown Portland resident is leaving the neighborhood after living there for about 150 years
An iconic elm tree in downtown Portland is set to be removed by Portland Parks & Recreation to protect community safety, due to significant damage and declining health following recent storms. Officially designated as Heritage Tree No. 1, the elm has stood at 1111 S.W. 10th Ave. since approximately 1870 — when Portland had a population of 90,000 and people commuted by horse. According to a city press release, “This...

My opinion: This Democratic presidential contest will not employ ranked choice voting; let’s pretend it does
Let’s play a game. Let’s pretend that readers of this publication get to pick the Democratic nominee for president, and did so via Portland's new ranked choice voting system, which will see its debut this fall. In November, Portlanders will use a new type of election to select a mayor, auditor and city councilors. Rather than vote for one candidate, they'll rank their preferences from a list of candidates. This...

The lawmakers protested the Netanyahu administration’s handling of the war in Gaza. After the Wednesday, July 24, speech, Merkley released a statement. “I...
Hot Hops stay that way with 13-4 win over Canadians
Keep ‘em comin’. The Hops’ hot streak continued with a 13-4 win over Vancouver on Thursday night, July 25, at Hillsboro Ballpark. The win was the fourth straight for Hillsboro (11-16) and sixth in seven games, and in light of two straight Spokane losses, pulled the fifth place Hops within eight games of the first place Indians in the NWL second half standings. ...

Missing middle housing debuts in 2024 Street of Dreams
Affordable missing middle housing debuts in the 2024 Street of Dreams in August with a duplex, a triplex, and a cottage cluster in Portland. Such housing, which used to be common, largely disappeared when many cities adopted zoning policies that favored single-family neighborhoods. But as increasing home prices created an affordable housing crisis, the Oregon Legislature and Portland City Council moved to ban single-family zoning with the goal of increasing residential densities with less expensive housing styles. ...
Movie Review: ‘Die Hard’ still brings the action
The debate over whether it is or is not a Christmas movie continues, but whatever any individual decides about that, “Die Hard” certainly is a milestone of the action genre. The 1988 adventure — which Paramount+ With Showtime presents Sunday, July 28 — cemented the big-screen stardom Bruce Willis had aspired to after gaining initial fame through the television series “Moonlighting.” His smart-aleck brand of humor and massively independent image surely help to inform the character of John McClane, a New York police officer who...

Summer on the Seine: Boat parade welcomes athletes to Paris 2024
The Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony is causing somewhat of a “Seine” in the news. OK, that was an admittedly ridiculous pun, but the crux of the statement remains true. Airing live from Paris, France, Friday, July 26, on NBC and Peacock, the 2024 Summer Olympic Games are the first iteration of the long-running athletic tradition to host its opening ceremony (and many events) outside of a stadium. The reason for this decision is not for a lack of stadiums — Paris has several sporting...

OPINION: Keeping mental health top of mind this fire season
The 2024 wildfire season is off to an aggressive start. We’re seeing fires that are starting earlier and spreading more quickly than previous years — a troublesome sign of what could be on the horizon later this summer. While the physical risks of wildfires are well known, few people consider the negative impacts that these fires — and climate change as a whole — can have on our mental health. Recent studies have shown an increase in anxiety-related emergency department visits, as well as an...
