    Prep roundup: Canby and Kennedy baseball extend winning streaks

    The No. 3 Cougars won their ninth consecutive game on Friday, May 3, as they totaled 10 hits and four RBIs to defeat Putnam 6-2 on the road.

    Quinton Esmay led Canby with two hits and one RBI, while Liam Steele finished with two hits and Dylan Nelson finished with one hit and two RBIs. Hayden Davis, Joe Scott, Brady Ackerman and Jack Brauckmiller, meanwhile, each added one hit and Blake Miller contributed one hit and one RBI.

    Brauckmiller opened on the mound for Canby. The freshman allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out four and walking one. Nelson threw two innings in relief, striking out one and walking one.

    Canby (18-3, 11-1 NWOC) will face La Salle Prep on Wednesday, May 8, at home and on Friday, May 10, on the road.

    Canby softball

    Allison Hayzlett was dealing in the circle all game, as the sophomore recorded 13 strikeouts to lead the No. 9 Cougars over Centennial 4-1 on Friday.

    Hayzlett surrendered just one run on three hits over seven innings. She led the team at the plate as well, securing two hits and one RBI. Madison Bigej and Summer St John contributed one hit and one RBI each while Taylor Saucedo and Megan VanValkenburg each contributed one hit. Abigail Troutman finished with one RBI.

    Canby (10-9, 6-3 NWOC) will face Wilsonville on Wednesday, May 8, at home and will host La Salle Prep on Friday, May 10.

    Kennedy baseball

    The Trojans have reached 20 wins on the season after routing Salem Academy on the road in a double-header on Friday.

    Kennedy won the first game 11-1 and the second 7-0. Brody Kleinschmit led the Trojans in game one with four hits and two RBIs. Colby Rich and Kody Graves each added two hits and one RBI, while Dom Beyer posted a game-high three RBIs. Rylee Walker finished with one hit and one RBI.

    Henry Beyer opened game one on the mound, surrendering one run on zero hits, striking out five and walking three. Dom Beyer threw one inning in relief, striking out two. No stats were provided for game two.

    With the season-series sweep complete over the Crusaders, the No. 8 Trojans (20-1, 12-0 SD2) will now face their biggest challenge of the season in No. 5 Blanchet Catholic (21-1, 12-0 SD2). Kennedy hits the road on Wednesday, May 8, and will host Blanchet Catholic on Friday, May 10.

    Newberg softball

    The Tigers remain tied for first place in the Pacific Conference with No. 5 Sherwood after they outlasted Century 19-17 on the road on Friday.

    Delainy Willard drove in six runs on four hits to lead Newberg, who collected a total of eight hits and 15 RBIs in the outing. Freshman Paisley Conway finished with two hits and four RBIs, while Renika Oliveira and Grace Spry each added one hit and one RBI. Baylee Nix and Brooklyn Mills each contributed one RBI.

    Nix was in the circle for Newberg. The senior surrendered 11 earned runs on nine hits over seven frames, striking out five and walking 11.

    Newberg (11-11, 6-2 Pacific) has a tough upcoming stretching, facing Sherwood on Wednesday, May 8, on the road and hosting McMinnville on Friday, May 10.
