    Prep roundup: Canby baseball extends win-streak to eight

    The 5A No. 3 Cougars allowed just two hits against Centennial on Thursday, May 2, as Canby completed its season sweep over the Eagles.

    Canby's victory comes just two days after thumping Centennial 18-0 on Tuesday. Hayden Davis led the Cougars with three hits while Brady Ackerman recorded two hits and one RBI. Liam Steele finished with two hits and Blake Miller added one hit and one RBI.

    Quinton Esmay opened on the mound for Canby, surrendering zero runs on just two hits, striking out four and walking two. Ackerman threw three innings in relief, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out two.

    The Cougars (17-3, 10-1 NWOC) will look to continue their winning ways against Putnam (8-11, 6-5 NWOC) on Friday, May 3, on the road.

    North Marion/Gervais baseball

    The 4A No. 1 Huskies pushed their winning streak to 11 games on Thursday, completing a three-game series sweep against Stayton.

    North Marion led 4-0 after two innings before eventually winning 8-2. Senior Jayden Ohlman led the Huskies with three hits and two RBIs while Carter Reilly and Cole Hammack recorded two hits and one RBI each. The team totaled 13 hits and eight RBIs.

    Junior Will Stafford opened on the mound, surrendering one run on three hits, striking out one and walking two. Michael Crain threw an inning in relief, allowing one run on two hits, striking out one.

    North Marion (19-2, 12-0 OWC) will open its three-game series against No. 10 Philomath/Alsea (16-5, 11-1 NWOC) on Monday, May 6, on the road.

    St. Paul softball

    The 2A/1A No. 11 Buckaroos split their double-header against No. 9 Clatskanie on Thursday, winning the first bout 4-3 before losing game two 12-1 after five innings.

    In game one, St. Paul managed just five hits and two RBIs, with Payton Whitlock and Isla Haven each recording two hits and Josey Edwards and Amelia Cavazos adding one RBI each.

    Cavazos was in the circle all game, surrendering three runs on four hits, striking out seven and walking six. In game two, Clatskanie wasted little time, scoring four runs in the first inning. A seven-run burst in the fourth frame all but clinched the win for Clatskanie.

    St. Paul managed just two hits and one RBI in game two. Haven finished with one hit and one RBI. Whitlock added one hit. Brooke Schindler opened game two in the circle, allowing five runs on four hits, striking out one and walking seven. Gracie Koch threw two innings in relief, surrendering seven runs on four hits, striking out three and walking four.

    St. Paul (14-3, 9-3 SD1) will hit the road for a double-header against Nestucca (5-11, 3-9 SD1) on Friday, May 5.

    Newberg softball

    The Tigers secured their fifth Pacific Conference victory of the season against Liberty, scoring six runs in the final inning to erase a two-run deficit on the road.

    Despite the 11-7 win, Newberg trailed for much of the game and retained short-lived leads as the game went back-and-forth. The Tigers collected 11 hits and six RBIs in the outing, with Baylee Nix recording three hits and three RBIs to lead the team. Rylee Purdom finished with two hits and one RBI, while CiCi Smith and Renika Oliveira each added one hit and one RBI.

    Sophomore Gracie Spry opened in the circle for the Tigers, surrendering three runs on eight hits over four innings, striking out three and walking one. McKenna Proffitt threw one inning in relief, allowing one hit and striking out two. Nix, meanwhile, threw two innings in relief, surrendering four runs on four hits, striking out one and walking one.

    Newberg (10-11, 5-2 Pacific) will face Century (12-10, 2-6 Pacific) on Friday, May 3, at Hillsboro Stadium.
