My opinion: This Democratic presidential contest will not employ ranked choice voting; let’s pretend it does
Let’s play a game. Let’s pretend that readers of this publication get to pick the Democratic nominee for president, and did so via Portland's new ranked choice voting system, which will see its debut this fall. In November, Portlanders will use a new type of election to select a mayor, auditor and city councilors. Rather than vote for one candidate, they'll rank their preferences from a list of candidates. This...
Oregon Sen. Merkley comments on Israeli PM’s speech before Congress
Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley was among several elected lawmakers this week who chose not to attend the speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before a joint session of the U.S. Congress. The lawmakers protested the Netanyahu administration’s handling of the war in Gaza. After the Wednesday, July 24, speech, Merkley released a statement. “I...
Summer on the Seine: Boat parade welcomes athletes to Paris 2024
The Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony is causing somewhat of a “Seine” in the news. OK, that was an admittedly ridiculous pun, but the crux of the statement remains true. Airing live from Paris, France, Friday, July 26, on NBC and Peacock, the 2024 Summer Olympic Games are the first iteration of the long-running athletic tradition to host its opening ceremony (and many events) outside of a stadium. The reason for this decision is not for a lack of stadiums — Paris has several sporting...
Movie Review: ‘Die Hard’ still brings the action
The debate over whether it is or is not a Christmas movie continues, but whatever any individual decides about that, “Die Hard” certainly is a milestone of the action genre. The 1988 adventure — which Paramount+ With Showtime presents Sunday, July 28 — cemented the big-screen stardom Bruce Willis had aspired to after gaining initial fame through the television series “Moonlighting.” His smart-aleck brand of humor and massively independent image surely help to inform the character of John McClane, a New York police officer who...

Then, he whips up a Chile lime creamed corn with garden tomatoes before making a tres leches, a delicious dessert of milks, lime and nutmeg. Moonfall ...

Summer school wrapping up in Newberg
As the 2024 installment of Newberg-Dundee summer school winds down in early August, organizers and students alike are celebrating the annual rite as a success. The program, which is funded by federal grants, centers on two distinct groups: pre-K-12 students who are receiving additional support through federal programs and those who require extra support (typically in math and literacy) according to assessment data, as well as students in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in credit recovery classes. ...

Student representatives added to Newberg-Dundee school board
There are three new members on the Newberg-Dundee school board, and they appear decidedly younger than the elected directors of the school district’s leading body. Newberg High School students Sienna Hansen, Oliver Kolbet and Katelyn Nummelin were selected to become student representatives on the board in mid-June. While the student representatives do not have voting power on the board, they are on hand to observe the meeting and can weigh in on agenda items. ...
OPINION: Keeping mental health top of mind this fire season
The 2024 wildfire season is off to an aggressive start. We’re seeing fires that are starting earlier and spreading more quickly than previous years — a troublesome sign of what could be on the horizon later this summer. While the physical risks of wildfires are well known, few people consider the negative impacts that these fires — and climate change as a whole — can have on our mental health. Recent studies have shown an increase in anxiety-related emergency department visits, as well as an...

Each was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a college or university of their choice as part of their appointment. The scholarships are provided by sponsors Cascade Steel Rolling Mills, Kit Johnston Farms, United Steelworkers Union and the Yamhill...

RURAL REFLECTIONS: Carrying a torch
How can I possibly write this article and not have "(C'mon Baby) Light My Fire" going through my nimble brain. It is, and I will write despite my head bobbing to the music that only I can hear. Torch. Hm. I remember my mother using the word when saying that some girl was carrying a torch for some guy. Hm. A torch. Perhaps this form of the word did indeed involve a flame in the young lass' heart, but not a real one. There are...
Our TV picks for Friday, July 26: 2024 Paris Olympics; WWE Friday Night SmackDown

It features participating nations’ athletes parading through the stadium as the host nation highlights its best side. Stay tuned for the torch-lighting ceremony. WWE Friday Night SmackDown KPTV 8 p.m. Despite felling Roman Reigns for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XL, the Bloodline is still a thorn in Cody Rhodes’ side. Oregon congressional delegates urge VA to expand care to medical cannabis
U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley wants veterans to receive access to medical cannabis through Veterans Affairs clinics and hospitals. Merkley, D-Oregon, led a left-leaning independent and seven other Democratic senators, including Oregon’s U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, in sending a letter the week of July 15 to Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough, urging him to allow medical marijuana treatment for veterans in states that have legalized its use. Medical cannabis is legal in nearly 40 states and the District of Columbia, but the federal government has not...
Elevate your backyard experience
Chances are, no one wants to replicate the side effects of the global pandemic anytime soon. Despite the upheaval it brought to so many people’s lives, there was at least one silver lining to the pandemic: a newfound appreciation for backyards and other outdoor living areas. Back in 2021, OnePoll, on behalf of the landscaping company TruGreen, found survey participants reported spending 14 hours outside every week, which marked a three-hour increase from before the pandemic hit. ...
