Baltderdash to perform in Shell Lake this weekend

SHELL LAKE — Eau Claire saxophonist Sue Orfield returns to the Shell Lake Arts Center with her band Balterdash on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Erika Quam Memorial Theatre. Orfield knew what she wanted to play the moment she heard a tenor saxophone on the radio while riding on a school bus as a child. She picked up the horn in fifth grade, at age 10, and it came naturally. She has played piano even longer, since first grade, and still uses the keyboard to write music and accompany her students. Today, Orfield is a freelance musician who leads and plays in several bands. She has been on the stage wth Bo Diddley, Bobby McFerrin, the Indigo Girls, Ann Wilson (Heart), Dizzy Gillespie, Ivan Neville and Jo Dee Messina. You can find her performing in the Twin Cities a couple of times a month and across Wisconsin. Her ties to Shell Lake run deep: She attended the Arts Center as a high school camper and has taught at its jazz camps several times. Chippewa Manor celebrates Veterans Day

CHIPPEWA FALLS — Lani Rethaber has seen the value that a service dog can bring to a veteran. Rethaber talks about veterans who had become withdrawn and avoid social activities with friends and family, and struggle to sleep. Rethaber is executive director of Wausau-based PatriotK9s of Wisconsin, which places between 11 and 25 dogs with veterans annually. The Chippewa Manor held its 18th annual Veterans Salute on Thursday, where the retirement community home presented Rethaber with a check for $57,100, collected over the past year. "I was overwhelmed," Rethaber said after the ceremony was over. "It's remarkable someone can raise that amount for us." Rethaber brought AISA, a K9 he described as one of their "ambassador dogs" for events like the one Thursday. He's a certified dog trainer, and he said the cost to acquire and train a service dog is now about $30,000. "Our work is about helping that person become independent again," Rethaber said. He told the crowd about the process they go through to find eligible veterans and connect them with the type of dog they need. HHS students to perform fall play 'The Liar'

Hayward High School Drama Club members will present their next great performances Friday through Sunday Nov. 6, 7 and 8 at the ADS Auditorium. The student thespians are diving into Carlo Goldoni’s “The Liar” in Tunk Yalman’s vibrant translation, a play about storytelling—both the intoxication of exaggeration and its inevitable consequences. They grapple with the questions: What is truth? Why do we lie? And what happens when our lies spiral out of control? “Join us and find yourself laughing at Lelio’s audacity, cringing at his close calls, and perhaps recognizing a bit of yourself in his predicament. After all, we’re all storytellers in our own lives,” said Play Director Mike Anderson. “The question Goldoni poses is: Can we learn to tell the truth before our lies catch up with us?” Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday Nov. 6-7 and 1:30 p.m. Sunday Nov. 8.
