Providence Christian loses back-and-forth battle with Commerce
LILBURN — With the Georgia high school football playoffs beginning next week, Friday’s game was a crucial game for playoff positioning and momentum. Commerce running back Demarco Huff had a huge night as he ran for over 300 yards as the Tigers (9-1) defeated Providence Academy (6-4) 42-32 in a battle for second place in Region 8-AA. “We were resilient and kept coming back all night but at the end of the day you simply must make plays against a team like that," Providence head coach Trae Owens said. "Tonight Commerce made more plays than us and of course that is why they won the game. We battled back tonight just like we have all season, but we just fell a bit short.” Following a short kickoff return, Providence began from the Storm 21-yard line. After several nice runs by Elliot Lee, the Storm moved out to their own 38-yard line. Facing a 3rd and long situation, Storm quarterback Riley Braiden threw a beautiful over the shoulder pass to Mason Malone for a 29-yard pickup down to the Commerce 33-yard line. Providence finished off the early drive as Kylan Baker hauled in a 9-yard strike from Braiden for the game’s

Providence Christian seeks another first in breakthrough football season
In a football season full of breakthroughs, Providence Christian can earn more than just a Region 8-AA runner-up finish with a win on Friday. A victory would be the Storm’s first over Commerce, which boasts a 10-0 all-time record in the series. All 10 have been lopsided with the closest coming in 2024, a 55-23 Providence loss. Providence has made a habit of breaking those kind of streaks lately with the program’s first wins over Athens Academy (it was previously 0-18 in the series) and Rabun County (previously 0-4 in the series) last week. All 22 of those losses to Athens Academy and Rabun were blowouts, too. The Storm’s defense was stout in the victory over Rabun, highlighted by three sacks and three tackles for losses by Moritz Wagner. Maurice Van de Loo had seven tackles (three for losses), two sacks and three QB hurries, Rico Newman had six tackles (one for loss) and an interception and Adiel Green had two tackles and five QB hurries. Offensively, Riley Braiden completed 28 of 41 passes for 325 yards and a touchdown. Mason Malone (10 catches, 94 yards) and Tyler Braiden (eight catches, 74 yards) were his top targets. Norcross fighting for playoffs in game at surging Duluth
Norcross’ defense of its position in the state football playoff race is at the forefront of Friday night’s rivalry game with Duluth, which is playing its best late in the season. Heading into the regular-season finale, Norcross sits at No. 29 in the Georgia High School Association’s PSR Power Rankings and among the 32 teams who will qualify for state. A loss to No. 42 Duluth would give the Blue Devils a losing record and would put their playoff hopes in great peril. Norcross has won 18 straight games in the longtime rivalry, including 35-21 last season. Its last loss to the Wildcats came in 2003, well before the current players were born. Maintaining that streak looks tougher with how Duluth has played of late, including back-to-back wins over Hebron Christian and Berkmar. Though the Wildcats lost 40-34 in double overtime to Peachtree Ridge last week, they show considerable moxie in a second-half comeback. Down 21-0 at halftime, they outscored Peachtree Ridge 27-6 over the final two quarters to force OT. There were no shortage of offensive stars for Duluth in that loss. Quarterback Marion Luckett completed 15 of 29 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for
