City of Sunnyside roundabout design moves forward at I-82 exit 69

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. —Design work is moving forward for a roundabout at the Interstate 82 Exit 69 eastbound ramp and Highway 241 in Sunnyside to improve traffic flow and handle freight and development traffic. According to a presentation for city council members on November 4, a 2021 Falcon Ridge traffic study found future operation problems at the eastbound ramp terminal. It also said WSDOT required the city to study intersection changes tied to development traffic and approved a single-lane roundabout option in 2022. The planned work includes a single-lane roundabout at SR 241 and the I-82 Exit 69 eastbound ramp terminal. It also includes roadway reconstruction, drainage upgrades, person facilities with ADA curb ramps, lighting, signs and pavement markings. The city received $1,802,000 in Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board funding through the 2025-27 transportation budget. The update said design is fully funded through that money and developer contributions, the agenda report said. The preliminary engineering package totals $600,000. That included $527,000 for consultant design services and $73,000 for WSDOT services, the report added. Council approval of the design agreement is listed as the next step. After that, the city plans to begin design work and pursue additional construction funding.

Construction to impact traffic next week on Nob Hill Boulevard in Yakima

YAKIMA, Wash. - The City of Yakima says construction to improve a water main and roadway surfaces will continue to impact traffic on part of Nob Hill Boulevard. Final paving on the road between 28th Avenue and 40th Avenue will occur Nov. 10 to 12 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day. Lanes will be narrowed intermittently throughout the paving process and traffic will be controlled by flaggers. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and drive cautiously through work zones. Access to homes and businesses in the area will be maintained as much as possible and emergency vehicles will have access to the area if necessary.

Kittitas County, WA—Jodi Hammond holds the lead in the race for Kittitas County Prosecuting Attorney. Expanded services, less driving for vets. Work starts on new Tri-Cities VA clinic.

Work has started to build the Kennewick VA Clinic , a Tri-Cities clinic that will be 10 times larger than the current one in the Richland Federal Building and offer far more services. “The impact of this clinic is going to be measured far beyond concrete, brick and mortar,” said Luke Strozewski, acting regional operations officer for the Veterans Administration health service area that includes Washington state, at a ceremonial groundbreaking Thursday. “It’s going to be measured by healthier veterans, stronger families and lives that have been improved because the care is available right here in their community,” he said. The new VA clinic building will have about 100,000-square feet, more than 10 times the size of the clinic now in Richland. It will offer not only primary care for veterans but expand offerings to include pharmacy, prosthetics, laboratory services, dental, audiology, optometry, radiology, home-based primary care and support for homeless veterans, all in a modern medical setting. Just this week local VA officials also heard that funding had been made available to offer some specialized cardiology care in the Tri-Cities. The result will be fewer trips for veterans to the Jonathan Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center in Walla Walla

Updated Benton County WA vote count sees Ki-Be levy move toward passing

Results on election night showed that a levy to help Kiona-Benton City schools with operations and their attempt to get off of a state financial oversight list was headed toward failure by just two votes. That meant the race was too close to call, with 775 ballots in support of the levy and 777 ballots opposed. “I know it sounds funny,” Said Pete Peterson, Kiona-Benton’s Superintendent, “but I wasn’t shocked because our last few elections have been exceedingly close.” Now that the ballot counts have been updated, the levy is passing by 32 votes, or 50.6% in support and 49.4% opposed.
