Democratic wave has robotaxi industry sweating
Tuesday's Democratic election sweep could tap the brakes on the autonomous vehicle industry's ambitious growth plans. Why it matters: Just as robotaxis are hitting the streets in larger numbers, the technology has become more politically charged in Washington and statehouses across the country. The industry's hopes for federal legislation overriding state and local rules "just became a pipe dream," said Rob Grant, AV policy expert and cofounder of Autnmy AI. The big picture: Congress has tried and failed for nearly a decade to establish national rules for autonomous vehicles. Although early bills attracted bipartisan support, Democrats lately have opposed industry-backed proposals, citing concerns about safety, labor protections and whether federal regulations should override state laws. If Congress can't pass an AV bill, that will put more stress on state-level policy debates, notes MIT research scientist and mobility expert Bryan Reimer. "The (industry's) goal was to move fast and furious so nothing can stop this," he said. "But now it's an open question." Case in point: Tesla has a lot riding on regulatory relief. Yemeni coffee spot for Rockville
Haraz Coffee House, a Michigan-based chain specializing in Yemeni-style drinks and sweets, is heading to Rockville’s Federal Plaza. It’s taking over the long-empty space that once belonged to the Chinese restaurant Seven Seas, which closed in 2018 after 31 years. Haraz, which has grown to more than 60 locations since it launched in 2021, is named for a village in Yemen where its beans are sourced. Along with a long list of coffees, the menu also includes matcha drinks, fruit refreshers, Adeni (spiced milk) tea and halal pastries. Haraz is the second Middle Eastern coffee chain to expand to our area this year, following the recent debut of Saudi-style Shotted at Westfield Montgomery mall.
