Why an Oregon high school football player was ejected from rivalry game before kickoff
A situation that transpired before an Oregon high school football game on Friday, Oct. 16, led to one player being ejected before kickoff even happened. The situation transpired at Jefferson High School (OR) as visiting Grant players ran out onto the field for the team's entrance. As the Generals ran onto the field, video shows a Jefferson player coming out and violently shoving a Grant player that was carrying the American flag. That player got up and went to confront the Jefferson player before being separated while the rest of his teammates went to their respective sideline. Portland-area new station KATU reported on the situation, noting the Oregon School Activities Association said the player was ejected due to the conduct. In a statement to the news station, the OSAA stated that "Rivalry game or not, there's no place for this behavior before, during or after a game." While the OSAA does not comment on any disciplinary measures for situations such as that, an ejection typically leads to an athlete being removed from that game and suspended for the next game as well. That athlete is also typically required to complete a sportsmanship course. Portland Public Schools also sent a statement

University of Oregon may cut state's only history PhD program
Humanities graduate programs including history, romance languages and comparative literature are on the chopping block as University of Oregon prepares to address a $65 million structural budget deficit . No final decisions have been made, but proposals have trickled down to faculty and students. The university community has felt the heavy weight of uncertainty as the end of October draws closer. On Oct. 28, updated proposals will be presented at the University Senate meeting, kickstarting the community input period before final decisions come before the Board of Trustees in mid-December. "I thought the hard parts of this term would be being back in the classroom, keeping up with the graduate course load, getting to know people, learning my way around town," said first-year history Ph.D. student Clara Barclay. "Instead, I'm focused on fighting for the continued existence of my program. That's certainly not what I expected or wanted from my first term in graduate school." More: University of Oregon faculty fear $65M deficit threatens tenure History department faculty were told the department's graduate programs are among several being considered for "sunsetting," meaning no more history master's or doctoral students would be accepted, but current students could still continue their program.
