School tax votes split: Cuts loom for two districts
Maumee and Springfield schools are bracing for major budget cuts after voters rejected proposed income taxes Tuesday, while voters in Toledo and Sylvania approved additional funding for their school districts. In October, Springfield Superintendent Matt Geha told members of the board of education the district would have to cut $500,000 from the budget even if the income tax measure passed. He warned that number could rise to $2.5 million if it failed. Issue 6, the 0.5 percent income tax for Springfield schools, lost by 589 votes, with 6,518 votes against and 5,929 votes in favor. Mr. Geha said he was still trying to calm down and regroup after the levy defeat. “We will have to decide on the cuts we need to make for fall of 2027,” Mr. Geha said. “This is going to mean reduced opportunities for kids and a reduced number of adults in the buildings. There will be job cuts, and all of these things are going to be painful.” Mr. Geha said cuts are coming regardless of whether the school board decides to put a levy on the May ballot. “Even if we pass a levy, then it would not help us now,” he said. “The

UT to complete Swan Creek project with Great Lakes Commission grant
The University of Toledo has received another $897,557 from the Ann Arbor-based Great Lakes Commission to finish a nearly $1.2 million restoration project along Swan Creek on land the university owns north of its Health Science campus. University officials said crews will soon begin clearing trees and building an access route to reach 1,700 linear feet of the creek. The route runs through the property of neighboring ALRO Steel, which has granted access. Work along that section of Swan Creek began in 2023 after the commission allocated $242,000. The project is a small part of a much larger effort to restore the Maumee River, the Ottawa River, Swan Creek, and other Toledo-area waterways as part of a U.S.-Canada agreement made in 1987 to improve 43 areas of concern across the Great Lakes region.

Editorial: Quit passing the buck, TPS
A parent of a special needs child in Toledo Public Schools shouldn’t have to go to a Toledo school board meeting to complain about service. Instead of getting the attention to her child’s needs, Katie Mattimoe Heffernan was told that the teachers union and the school district’s human resources department are working to “expedite getting paraprofessionals in the needed position.” Read more Blade editorials The fact that the parent felt the need to take her concern to the full board suggests more emphasis is needed for the “expedite” part. Ms. Heffernan is concerned that her child at Beverly Elementary School, who has Down syndrome, is being ignored in the classroom. Ms. Heffernan was forced to reveal in public personal issues involving her daughter that she should not have been required to complain about to the board. This was reported last Wednesday by The Blade’s Eric Taunton. The problem, as Ms. Heffernan sees it, is that Beverly has only one assigned building-wide paraprofessional. This was her second time bringing this issue to the board. A similar response was given to her on Sept. 22. At that time, the board had 244 paraprofessionals, but 43 vacant positions. “To date, my daughter has

Saint Ignatius Takes First Step to Canton
OHIO CITY, OH - This past Friday, the Saint Ignatius Wildcats (6-5) were at Wasmer Field for the fourth and final time this season, as they took on the Berea-Midpark Titans (6-5) in the 8 vs. 9 matchup in round one of the OHSAA playoffs, with the winner set to face the St. Edward Eagles (9-1) in round two. Saint Ignatius was looking to carry the positive momentum from last week's 38-20 victory over Football North into Friday night's action, a game which snapped their three-game losing skid. Meanwhile, Berea-Midpark was looking to get back in the win column after suffering a tough 31-27 defeat to Avon Lake a week prior, a game in which they blew a 21-10 lead in the third quarter. After a 4-1 start and 4 straight wins, Berea-Midpark went 2-3 in their last five games, finishing the regular season 6-4 and 4-3 in conference play. This game was the first-ever meeting between Berea-Midpark and St. Ignatius, and it was also the first-ever football playoff game hosted at Wasmer Field.
