The first was a 10 year tax levy, which would have raised an additional $400,000 in its first year to help support $4 million worth of upcoming school purchases including new technology, new school buses and other projects.

Fired executive director sues Le Sueur city, HRA over claims of discrimination

The former executive director of the Le Sueur Housing and Redevelopment Authority is suing the city and claiming that her May 15, 2024, firing violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. Melissa Huntington, through her attorney Adam N. Froehlich, of Mankato, says she disclosed several mental health diagnoses, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorder and recurrent major depressive disorder to board members after receiving a negative performance review and the board did not take adequate steps to provide accommodations. The complaint was filed June 29 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. Following the review, Huntington formally disclosed her diagnoses and told the authority board she needed reasonable accommodations in order to meet the board’s expectations, the lawsuit states. According to the complaint, Huntington’s evaluation by the board, which was conducted on Nov. 15, 2023, showed she needed to improve her “overall management performance,” “communications/relationship with the HRA board,” “staff supervision and overall performance of HRA staff,” “financial management and project management” and “achievement of goals set by the HRA board.” The review contained several comments, including that Huntington was “unprepared,” “relied on calling other (executive directors) and HUD personnel to complete tasks that she should be able

NEW ULM, Minnesota — Congressman Brad Finstad trailed by roughly 300 votes in his re-election campaign but delayed conceding to Rochester school teacher Jake Johnson. It was believed that Finstad, at home on his New Ulm farm, was weighing a request for a recount. With the last precinct reporting at 2:30 a.m., the margin was 49.99% to 49.89% in Johnson’s favor. According to Minnesota law, a recount can take place if the difference is less than 0.25%. Johnson’s lead was 0.10% . Local voters approve school funding increase

MONTICELLO — Public school districts across Minnesota, including those serving Monticello, Big Lake and Becker, will receive additional funding beginning next summer after voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment increasing annual payments from the state's Permanent School Fund. The amendment, approved in Tuesday's general election, increases the amount distributed annually from the $2.3 billion fund, which supports public education without raising income or property taxes. Unofficial statewide results early Wednesday showed approximately 73% of voters supporting the measure, with 23% opposed and 4% leaving the question blank. Locally, the amendment received majority support in Monticello, Big Lake and Becker, as well as their surrounding townships, according to unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office. Support was strongest in Monticello, where 4,309 voters supported the amendment and 1,695 opposed it. Including ballots left blank, the measure received 68.8% support in the city. In Big Lake, 64.1% of voters supported the amendment, while Becker voters approved it with 60.7% support. Voters in the surrounding townships were less supportive. The amendment received 57.8% support in Monticello Township, 56.4% in Big Lake Township and 55.5% in Becker Township. Treichler wins Wright County sheriff's race with 76% of vote

WRIGHT COUNTY — Chief Deputy Matt Treichler will become Wright County's next sheriff after defeating fellow Sheriff's Office veteran Rob Mossman by a decisive margin in Tuesday's election. Treichler received 43,303 votes, or 75.63%, compared with Mossman's 13,713 votes, or 23.95%, according to unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office. Treichler spent election night at Spilled Grain Brewhouse in his hometown of Annandale, surrounded by family, friends and supporters as the results came in. The Nov. 3 election determined who will succeed Sheriff Sean Deringer, who announced in January that he would not seek a third term. Deringer, first elected in 2018, plans to retire at the end of the year. Treichler, 48, has spent more than 25 years with the Wright County Sheriff's Office, including the past eight years as chief deputy. As second-in-command, he oversees the agency's daily operations, including a budget of approximately $52 million and more than 310 employees.
