Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop Public Schools plans next steps after referendum failures

GIBBON, Minn. (KEYC) - Two referendum questions on the ballot for the Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop Public Schools were voted down by district voters on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The first was a 10 year tax levy, which would have raised an additional $400,000 in its first year to help support $4 million worth of upcoming school purchases including new technology, new school buses and other projects.

Sibley East operating levy rejected by voters

ARLINGTON, Minn. (KEYC) - Sibley East Public Schools’ operating levy was rejected by voters on Tuesday, Nov. 3 with 2,176 voting against and 1,397 in favor. School officials were seeking an additional $850 dollars per student for the next 10 years to keep the district from making further cuts, after making $250,000 in cuts last spring.

ST. CLOUD — The sectional football championships are finally here. Six teams remain throughout the area in hopes of punching their ticket into the MSHSL State Tournament. I went 7-1 on my opening-round sectional picks, incorrectly picking Sauk Rapids over Bemidji. Having skipped the semifinal round with the short week, here we go for championship Friday. Local voters approve school funding increase

MONTICELLO — Public school districts across Minnesota, including those serving Monticello, Big Lake and Becker, will receive additional funding beginning next summer after voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment increasing annual payments from the state's Permanent School Fund. The amendment, approved in Tuesday's general election, increases the amount distributed annually from the $2.3 billion fund, which supports public education without raising income or property taxes. Unofficial statewide results early Wednesday showed approximately 73% of voters supporting the measure, with 23% opposed and 4% leaving the question blank. Locally, the amendment received majority support in Monticello, Big Lake and Becker, as well as their surrounding townships, according to unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office. Support was strongest in Monticello, where 4,309 voters supported the amendment and 1,695 opposed it. Including ballots left blank, the measure received 68.8% support in the city. In Big Lake, 64.1% of voters supported the amendment, while Becker voters approved it with 60.7% support. Voters in the surrounding townships were less supportive. The amendment received 57.8% support in Monticello Township, 56.4% in Big Lake Township and 55.5% in Becker Township. Rocori High School soccer player hurt in crash near Rice

(Cold Spring, MN) -- A Rocori High School soccer standout remains hospitalized with serious injuries following a crash in central Minnesota. Junior midfielder Juan Cortez was hurt early Sunday morning when the car he was riding in ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle east of Rice. The impact threw Cortez from the car. Rocori coach Chris Stavros says teammates, other schools and the community have rallied around the teenager and his family. A fundraiser raised more than 21-thousand dollars in less than 24 hours to help cover travel, food and other expenses while Cortez receives treatment.

Crimson boys soccer loses in heartbreaker at state

As the favored seed in the state tournament quarterfinals, Maple Grove boys soccer had a tough task on its hand. Familiar foe St. Paul Central was the first-round opponent on Oct. 29. The two teams had met in the season, and the Crimson survived a 5-3 slugfest. This time, the Minutemen won and ended the Crimson's season in penalty kicks. The first half started exactly how the Crimson drew it up. In the first 10 minutes, star senior midfielder Parker Carlson managed to control a bouncing ball on the Minutemen side of the field. Carlson made a couple moves and fired a through pass between a flurry of Minutemen defenders. Fellow senior and captain Bodi Nelson took the pass and rifled a perfect left footed shot past the goalkeeper into the back of the net. The Crimson now played with the lead, but both teams would continue to find offensive opportunities. The Minutemen had a few shots or drive in close to the goal that goalkeeper Raidyn Bailey stopped. The best play of the game from Bailey came near the end of the first half. Leading 1-0, a cross came into the box and a header directed at the ground
