Maroons put on offensive showcase in throttling of Marquette
MARQUETTE — It wasn’t the Fourth of July but there were plenty of fireworks as Menominee and Marquette renewed their gridiron hostilities for the first time since 2022 on Thursday. The Maroons defense bent but did not break while Dylan Beal and Jackson Myszak carried the show on offense as Menominee emerged victorious with a 49-19 victory over the Sentinels. Menominee rolled its way to 544 yards of total offense as Beal matched the school record for most touchdown passes in a game with five and Myszak piled up 22 carries 276 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Marquette gobbled up plenty of yardage as Winston Leonard threw for 330 yards but Menominee’s defense forced four turnovers, including a pair of Leonard interceptions, and held the Sentinels to 0-for-2 in fourth down situations to keep points at a premium. “I’m just very proud of the kids for the commitment and effort to each other; to go on to the next play and try to get better each play because early in the season especially, we have some mistakes and just some things that happen that don’t go our way,” Menominee coach Chad Brandt said. “We made a lot of

No sweat: Menominee outlasts Marquette in five-set thriller
MENOMINEE — Drenched in sweat and pushed to the brink of exhaustion, the Menominee High School girls volleyball team dug deep and proved their mettle with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Marquette in Tuesday’s Great Northern Conference showdown. Hot, humid temperatures outside made the MHS gym feel more like a jungle, leaving both Menominee and Marquette battling not only each other, but the limits of their own endurance. The oppressive conditions caused the match to be paused several times so that sweat could be toweled off the court, but no matter how much of themselves the Sentinels left on the floor, the Maroons gave just a tad more. Menominee erased a 2-0 deficit with a thrilling comeback that brought the crowd to their feet. Eventually, because early on, Tuesday’s contest appeared to be Marquette’s to lose. The Sentinels edged Menominee by five in the opening set despite the Maroons tying matters up at 20-20 thanks to an ace by Piper Ayers as Marquette closed on a 5-0 run to secure the 25-20 decision. Set two was a duel for momentum early on with four tied scores before aces by Addilyn Sheltrow, Preslie Mason and Elsie Talvensaari helped Marquette open up

Just as momentum had swung in favor of Menominee, the pendulum swung back in favor of the Braves as Gladstone reeled off four straight points before Emma Trombley sealed the set with a thunderous block-kill. Gladstone continued to stay on the offensive with a 7-1 run to begin set two before a kill by Carly Komp helped the Maroons trim the Braves’ lead down to three.
