Ski club fundraising after spring facilities damage
ISHPEMING, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — The Ishpeming Ski Club (ISC) is continuing to fundraise for facility repairs caused by damage from heavy snowfall this past spring. Richard Ziegler, president of the ISC, explained some of the damages that resulted from the snowfall and spring runoff, which included the plastic surfacing on their 40-meter ski jump and some of their grooming equipment. “We sustained serious damage to our quonset hut, our storage building where we keep our snow grooming equipment. It was flattened, unfortunately, so that was one major area (of) damage,” he said. “Also, our Winch Cat - the big snow cat that we use to groom our ski jumps - was in that building when it came down, and it got damaged pretty badly as well.” Ziegler shared that the club has located and purchased a new Winch Cat over the summer, and they’re currently prepping it for the winter season. The quonset hut debris has been cleaned and the leftover metal recycled, and the club is in a “holding pattern” on rebuilding it as of now. The goal is to build a pole barn in its place, and Ziegler said that the timeline for rebuilding is dependent on fundraising.

Red Wave to the champions: Menominee slices through Sagola-Felch to capture 17U State title
GLADSTONE — The dog days of summer ended with a trophy celebration as the Menominee Red Wave captured the Michigan Veterans Baseball 17U State championship on Sunday. The Michigan Veterans Baseball League, or MVB for short, was formed two years ago after the majority of what used to be American Legion baseball teams in the Upper Peninsula decided to form their own league after being frustrated by how Legion baseball was being run state-wide. Menominee reached the championship round of last year’s 17U tournament, only to be turned away by the Marquette County White Diamonds 7-6 in extra innings. The Red Wave were not about to let another crack at a State title go to waste. Urijah Linsmeier spun four innings of six-hit ball while Nathan Nelson drove in three runs to help Menominee crush Sagola-Felch 12-1 at Don Olsen Field in Gladstone, capping off a dominant weekend for the Red Wave. Menominee kicked off the 17U tournament on a rain-soaked Friday by whipping Sagola-Felch 8-0 before shutting down Gaylord 10-0 in a mercy-rule shortened affair. The Red Wave stayed hot on Saturday by cruising past the Marquette Reds 9-3, setting the stage for Sunday’s title bout with Sagola-Felch. Jax
