A Pine Mountain Music Festival preview for 2024
Pine Mountain Music Festival, the Upper Peninsula's premiere classical music festival, returns in June 2024. The season runs from June 15th to the 24th with events in Marquette, Houghton, and Ontonagon. Familiar entertainment returns this season with performances from the Bergonzi Piano Trio and the UPstarts!, plus a new opera-themed event, "The History of Opera in the U.P. Additionally, On-the-Town Concerts are planned to take place during Bridgefest in Houghton/Hancock and Marquette Art Week.
Community members turn out for annual Hancock ‘Pitch in for Parks’ cleanup
HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) - Dozens of community members pitched in for the city of Hancock’s annual ‘Pitch in for Parks’ park cleanup event Thursday evening. Community members visited several Hancock parks for cleanups, such as Porvoo Park along the Portage Canal. They picked up trash, raked and bagged leaves, and overall tidied up the parks for the summer.
Kasey Koski Picked as the First Commissioned Artist with the Keweenaw National Historic Park
The Keweenaw National Historic Park announces the artist selected for the 2024 commissioned artist program. Recently the National Historic Park, the park’s Advisory Commission, and the Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association announced Kasey Koski as the selected commissioned artist. Koski will work with the National Historic Park to draw attention to the Quincy Mine dry house.
Houghton researchers see slight increase in Isle Royale’s wolf population
HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC)—According to Michigan Technological University’s annual wolf count, the wolf population on Isle Royale is slightly increasing. The winter wolf-moose study, which began in 1958 and is the world’s longest predator-prey study, was delayed due to weather. MTU scientists and students spent seven weeks on Isle Royale surveying wolf tracks and sightings.
