JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin school administrators said a malfunction caused a delay in opening one of its safe rooms during Monday night’s storms. Around nine o’clock Monday night, school administrators sent out reminders about the safe rooms saying they would open when a tornado warning was issued or the tornado sirens sounded.

City of Joplin address damage across the city; Storm Sirens did not sound
RECAP: Liberty Utilities spokesperson stated 7,000 people were without power in the city of Joplin at the peak last night. 1/2 of them have been restored as of this morning. About 50 poles are being replaced in the city of Joplin. Liberty hope to have those in place by sundown today. There is no exact timeline when all power will be restored.

Monday night storms leave downed trees and power lines in its wake.
4 States – Thousands are without power due to a radar-indicated tornado. Winds took down countless trees which then took down power lines. Thousands remain without power across the region. Overnight the city of Joplin says potential tornado damage between 9th and 20th from Rangeline Rd to Duquesne. Reminder do not approach any downed power lines. Public works crews will be working to clear streets. There are no reports of injuries.
