Rodent droppings in soda syrup. Beaufort Co.'s worst October food inspections

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) has released its October food inspection reports. Two restaurants, two schools and a Parker’s scored less than A. Inspectors from the SCDA inspect restaurants and other food-serving establishments across the state on a routine basis. The frequency of inspections is based on the establishment’s risk-factor for food-borne illness and its compliance history, according to the SCDA. Grades are awarded on a 100-point scale, with A grades above 87 points, B 78 points, and C less than 78 points. Repeat infractions can result in lower letter grades no matter the points. Here’s why these Beaufort County establishments received their grades, and if their violations were corrected: E-Tang Asian Bistro Inspectors awarded E-Tang Asian Bistro, located at 811 William Hilton Parkway on Hilton Head Island, a C grade with 75 points in its Oct.15 routine inspection. The Lowcountry's standout spots for shrimp and grits

You can find dozens of variations on this classic Southern dish in restaurants across the country. But there's something special about eating shrimp and grits in the Lowcountry, where the main ingredients are so close to home. Shrimp and grits have been a staple in coastal Southern kitchens for generations, but when and where did the dish originate? Sources like the Levine Museum of the New South suggest shrimp and grits was likely the result of a convergence of Gullah Geechee, Indigenous and European cooking traditions that started centuries ago. An early recipe for "Shrimps and Hominy" appears in the 1930 cookbook, Two Hundred Years of Charleston Cooking. Over time, the dish was eventually popularized (and fancied up) by restaurants like Crook's Corner in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Husk in Charleston, South Carolina. Our list of standout shrimp and grits highlights crowd-favorite versions of this dish, both traditional and creative, where local ingredients like these are always the focus. That's thanks to farmers who still grow heritage-variety grains, like the Sea Island Yellow Guinea Flint Grits from Rollen's Raw Grains in Hardeeville, South Carolina, and purveyors like Tarvin Shrimp of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, who catch shrimp off the

Generations of Flavor: Cowart’s Family Dining brings rich history and new expansions to Brooklet

There is a special recipe for success that the Cowart family has been perfecting for over 70 years, and it relies heavily on faith, family, and scratch-made Southern comfort food. For Cowart's Family Dining owners Jimmy and LaDonna Cowart , their recent move to Brooklet in 2026 wasn't just a new business chapter—it was an answer to a prayer. "I absolutely knew we would make it here because we prayed over our decision," LaDonna Cowart shared in a recent interview. "I felt like God closed other doors and then He just busted these doors wide open. The community is great, and we want to get more involved once we get settled." A Four-Generation Southern Legacy The Cowart culinary timeline is a rich tapestry that stretches back nearly a century. Before 1950, Jimmy’s great-grandparents, Ben and Bessie Cowart, operated a local bed and breakfast. In 1950, his grandparents, Oscar and Ollie Mae Cowart , officially established the original Cowart’s Restaurant downtown on Highway 280 and Bacon Street in Pembroke, Georgia. The business was later passed down to James and Sandra Cowart , famously serving up to 350 hearty breakfasts a day until their retirement in the early 1990s. Jimmy and LaDonna
