(WCSC) — Folly Beach is rethinking how to protect its shoreline. The city is updating its Local Comprehensive Beach Management Plan, and the community is helping shape it. “It’s not an if thing; it’s a when, but we always are trying to be proactive as a city. That’s part of this whole plan is trying to take a proactive approach as opposed to reacting to erosion,” Chris Bizzell, mayor of Folly Beach, said.Folly Beach is known as a place to surf and tan, but it has a long history. “So many people don’t realize that in the 1980s, there was no beach. There was just Folly,” Nicole Elko, president of Elko Coastal Consulting, said.The city of Folly Beach says it’s been 50 years in the making, working to battle erosion. “It is frightening to see when it wipes out the whole beach, and it’s really close to the homes,” Folly Beach resident Gerrie Delaney said.“So crazy that some of the streets are now underwater. Some of the, there were houses in places where it’s now just beach. So, that’s a great reminder that we need to be really careful with our developments,” Elko said. That’s why the city is updating its Local Comprehensive Beach Management Plan. It covers erosion, public access, dune and wildlife protection and storm preparation. A plan approved every five years keeps Folly Beach eligible for state beach renourishment money. “For every dollar spent on beach renourishment, $1,200 is generated in economic activity. So, it’s not just a recreational thing. It’s an economic engine, and it’s something that we need to continue to sustain and be committed to preserving,” Bizzell said. Residents got the chance to weigh in on possible solutions, highlighting problem areas and what to prioritize, like sand fencing, dune restoration, native planting and even beachfront zoning rules. “If we can do more plantings that will help sustain it and establish itself into the soil, it may help the dunes live a little longer,” Delaney said. The city says it’s looking towards more nature-based solutions and more awareness through education. “We have to hit a certain criteria of sand loss to qualify for renourishment. Like, actually right now we haven’t hit that threshold, but it just takes one storm, and you can really be in a, you know, a different state,” Bizzell said. “Beach nourishment and dune restoration was kind of the original living shoreline. So, fixing beach erosion by just putting out there what naturally occurs, the sand, the vegetation and the dunes. That is engineering with nature,” Elko said. The city says the final submission of the plan to the state will be in 2027. The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services conducts a 30-day public comment period, considers comments, and then approves, modifies or returns the plan for revisions. The Folly Beach History Museum at 55 Center St. has an exhibit, Shifting Sands: The Ever Changing Story of Folly Beach, to explore the history of preservation efforts. </div></body>
