Nelsonville-York High School to host free driver training for teen drivers
COLUMBUS — Free hands-on training is available this summer for teen drivers in Ohio to practice crash avoidance techniques and gain the experience necessary to become safer drivers. New mural on East State Street
Mandi “Miss Birdy” Caskey’s outline for a mural on the East State St./Route 33 Underpass waits to be painted. On Monday night and during the weekend, Caskey completed the first steps in painting the mural, which was commissioned by Athens County Children Services. Minimal damage to Shawnee Township residence after fire
SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — A Sunday afternoon fire cause an estimated $10,000 to a residential structure in Shawnee Township. According to Austin Miller, chief of the Shawnee Township Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched shortly after 2:30 p.m. Sunday to 4057 Odema Drive in reference to a structure fire. Miller said smoke was visible as firefighters arrived. Upon entry inside the home, firefighters observed a fire on the ground floor of the dwelling. A hole was cut to allow firemen to access the crawl space, and the fire was extinguished.
Former nursing home employee claims she was fired for reporting understaffing
A former employee of an area nursing home is alleging that her employer violated Ohio’s whistleblower protection law, by firing her for raising concerns about nurse understaffing and resident safety. Chastidy Hanlon is suing the Dublin-based Continuing Healthcare Solutions, Inc., in Athens County Common Pleas Court. Housing agency denies missing filing deadline in tenant lawsuit
LOGAN — The Hocking Metropolitan Housing Agency (HMHA), which is being sued by a tenant, has denied the man’s claim that the agency missed a deadline for filing a legal motion to dismiss his complaint. Plaintiff Ronald Leonard, who was a tenant in an HMHA low-income apartment complex on South High Street, sued the agency in Hocking County Common Pleas Court in February 2023. Cat spay/neuter clinics scheduled
LOGAN – The Pet Orphanage is sponsoring two cat spay/neuter clinics for May/early June. Please pre-register and pre-pay (cash only) on Saturday, May 18, from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the Logan Hocking Library meeting room on Walnut Street side. Please arrive early as spaces are limited and are first come, first served. There will be a limit of two cats per person – $80/female and $50/male (which includes the rabies vaccine). ATHENS, OH – In partnership with the Mount Zion Black Cultural Center, WOUB Public Media is screening the new documentary called THE LINCOLN SCHOOL STORY as part of the kick-off event for Berry Day Week in Athens on May 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Athena. The production, created by Ohio Humanities and distributed by WOSU Public Media in Columbus, follows a group of Black mothers in Southwest Ohio as they heroically fight for school desegregation.
