Voters paid for school improvements. Salem-Keizer wants to close them
Salem-Keizer voters approved a $620 million bond measure in 2018 to address overcrowded schools, improve building safety, and expand educational opportunities across one of Oregon's largest school districts. Eight years later, the district is considering closing six elementary schools , including several that received bond-funded improvements. For families who remember the 2018 campaign, the closures have them questioning whether they'll support another construction bond. "There are many of us who believe that if this continues, the district is on a path to the following outcomes: drop in elementary achievement scores, a failed bond, a broken relationship with the community," parent Nick Sayen said at a recent school board meeting . The 2018 measure, known as Measure 24-429, funded renovations and expansions throughout Salem-Keizer Public Schools. Projects included improvements to classrooms, labs, cafeterias, security systems and aging infrastructure. It was the largest bond effort in district history and, at the time, the third-largest bond measure in Oregon. Voters narrowly approved it , with 53% voting in favor and 47% opposed. "I am very pleased that the citizens of Salem and Keizer continue to support the schools and trust the district to use the money wisely and as promised," said then-school board

UO's grad employee union calls for strike authorization vote
The Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation (GTFF) is holding a strike authorization vote after eight months of bargaining with University of Oregon. The graduate employee union began negotiating a new contract in March. In October, GTFF declared an impasse , triggering a 30-day cooling-off period. GTFF organizer Sophia Spangler said the union has been hosting more escalatory actions to build visibility around campus as negotiations ramp up. On Nov. 3, GTFF held a work-in demonstration in Johnson Hall, UO's administrative building. Spangler said more than 30 grad students joined throughout the day. A crowd of students quietly worked on laptops in the foyer of Johnson Hall, surrounded by picket signs asking for better pay. "This week, we wanted to still do an action, but one that was more centered on building solidarity, while also helping improve people's risk tolerance," said Spangler, who's a second year philosophy Ph.D. student. "It can be really scary to sit in in the administrative building, even though it's really comfy. We wanted to make ourselves hypervisible to admin." Second-year comparative literature Ph.D. student Shao-Chi Ou helped organize the demonstration, which brought him to Johnson Hall for the first time. Ou said he hopes to motivate other
