'It shows people really care about their public schools'

School districts across the Iron Range and entire state will be receiving a little financial boost. A Minnesota Constitutional amendment on the state ballot was overwhelmingly approved by state voters Tuesday, increasing funding to all school districts from the Permanent School Fund. With 100 percent of precincts reported, the final vote was 2,067,164, or an estimated 72.91 percent in favor of the amendment and 666,208 no. The number of blanks was estimated at 101,783. “I was just pleased with the results,” Sen. Mary Kunesh, DFL-New Brighton, Minnesota Senate chief author of the amendment said. “It’s not going to fill all the holes in the bucket of education, but we know that every little bit helps. I think about the cost of transportation and the cost of diesel, so this is one way that Minnesotan’s were able to show their support for schools.” “I’m incredibly happy, Rep. Spencer Igo, R-Wabana Township, Minnesota House of Representatives chief author of the measure said. “That was an amazing show of support for the Permanent School Fund, but most of all for all the schools and the students in the state. Everyone came together to do good for all.” What is means is that each

Vidmar steps into an unfamiliar role and earns trip to state

HIBBING—When Avery Kukowski went down with an injury, was Ava Vidmar ready for a change of responsibility? The answer was a resounding, ‘Yes.’ The Hibbing High School sophomore went from being the Bluejackets No. 2 runner to the No. 1 runner, and she responded well in her new role. Vidmar placed sixth overall at the Section 7AA Meet last week, and will now particpate in the State Class AA Meet, which begins Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake. As for as Hibbing coach James Plese is concerned, Vidmar exceeded his expectations. “The only reason I can say that is that Ava has been pretty consistent this season as our No. 2 runner,” Plese said. “It has been a rollercoaster as to whether people are injured, battling through different issues or some plateaus that we hit. “If it wasn’t Avery, we weren’t sure where the girls were going to be. We knew that Ava was our next best, but we knew it was a long shot. She exceeded expectations.” Kukowski tried to give it a go at sections, but she hadn’t run for three weeks. Still, the Hibbing senior placed 18th. “I tip my

Depth running sent Hibbing harriers to state

HIBBING—Brady and Charlie Janezich might be the top-two runners for the Hibbing High School boys cross country team, but it takes a team to get to state. That’s where Connor Sullivan, Laine Murden, Ryan Norenberg, Daxton Carey and Samuel Bottoms come into play. Those five runners, along with the Janezich’s, will be competing in the State Class AA Meet, which begins Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake. Bluejacket coach James Plese couldn’t be more proud of how all his runners stepped up to get the team to state. “Ryan was a big part of that,” Plese said. “He had a bad taste in his mouth last year, getting hurt and missing out on the team all together. “He was our consistent No. 3 all year. He stepped up for another injured kid (Sam Baumgardner), who set the tone training-wise. Those four guys (Brady, Charlie, Ryan and Sam) set the tone and expectations for the rest of the guys.” Finally healthy, Norenberg, is making up for lost time. He didn’t get to run in the state meet last year. “I had a lot of injuries,” Norenberg said. “I wasn’t doing a lot of proper

Brotherly love: Janezich siblings help lead Hibbing harriers to state

HIBBING—What’s better than having one Janezich on a team? The answer to that is two. Brady and Charlie Janezich have been the top-two runners on the Hibbing High School boys cross country team this season, along with Ryan Norenberg, Connor Sullivan, Daxton Cary, Laine Murden and Samuel Bottoms. Those seven runners will take their their talents to the State Class AA Meet, which begins Saturday at 3:15 p.m., at the Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake. Brady, a senior, and Charlie, a sophomore, have been the Bluejackets top runners this season and who finished in front alternated all season long as the brothers fought to improve their times. That success doesn’t come by accident. “The big thing is the amount of work they put in during the offseason to get to this point, especially our lead pack of runners,” Hibbing coach James Plese said. “That’s contagious. “Brady really went all in on running. It’s been super fun to watch him develop as a runner. He hits plateaus, just like anyone, but he’s smart enough to work through and know what to do to train his body, listen to his body and keep working through things.” Charlie, on the other

Canes football players honored for effort, accomplishments

Hayward-LCO Hurricanes football players were honored for their efforts and accomplishments this past season and in their high school careers during an awards banquet Tuesday Oct. 27. “Be proud of yourself,” Coach Noah LeBlanc told the players. The team lost 20 players from the previous year due to graduation, and coaches asked a lot of underclassmen to play big roles on the varsity, he said. “These freshmen, sophomores and juniors did a tremendous job stepping up. The future is super bright.” The varsity “stuck together and had the best team camaraderie we’ve had,” LeBlanc said, “They finished the year with two big wins.” The Canes had eight seniors this year, and “They embodied what it means to be a Hurricane. They never made excuses. They gave everything they had. We will miss these guys a ton,” LeBlanc said. The seniors are Caleb Springer, Gabe Bisonette, Davin Suo, Brendan Young, Chaska Carrillo, Thomas Girard, Cardin Nguyen and Jaycee Denomie. HHS students to perform fall play 'The Liar'

Hayward High School Drama Club members will present their next great performances Friday through Sunday Nov. 6, 7 and 8 at the ADS Auditorium. The student thespians are diving into Carlo Goldoni’s “The Liar” in Tunk Yalman’s vibrant translation, a play about storytelling—both the intoxication of exaggeration and its inevitable consequences. They grapple with the questions: What is truth? Why do we lie? And what happens when our lies spiral out of control? “Join us and find yourself laughing at Lelio’s audacity, cringing at his close calls, and perhaps recognizing a bit of yourself in his predicament. After all, we’re all storytellers in our own lives,” said Play Director Mike Anderson. “The question Goldoni poses is: Can we learn to tell the truth before our lies catch up with us?” Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday Nov. 6-7 and 1:30 p.m. Sunday Nov. 8. Admission is $5 per person; students are admitted free.

Prep Sports: Four teams, extraordinary talent and a winter worth watching

I can't remember being this excited about the start of a Northland high school winter sports season. Not because there are more good teams than usual, but because there are a handful of extraordinary young athletes playing practically in our backyard, including a basketball player who could someday become a household name in the WNBA and several hockey players with legitimate professional potential.

Former board member sues Ashland School District in federal court

A former Ashland School Board member has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the School District of Ashland and its Board of Education. Kelly Maday, an Ashland resident, filed the suit Aug. 31 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. She alleges the district and board retaliated against her for comments she made as a board member at a March 20, 2024, board meeting, in violation of her free speech rights under the First Amendment. The suit quotes part of the board’s censure of Maday, which stated that “Board Member Maday exceeded her role and authority as a School Board member by her behavior and comments” at that meeting. According to the complaint, her comments grew out of concerns she had raised with Superintendent Rob Prater about what the complaint called “unauthorized facility usage” of the district’s athletic and weightlifting facilities. The complaint said Prater denied her requests to place her concerns about facility access on a committee meeting agenda or the school board agenda. When she sought more detailed information, she was called to a meeting with Prater and then-board President Jeff Moravchik, where she was told her inquiries and information gathering amounted to “an
