Mayor seeks $400,000 payment to buy out remaining deputy chief
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik is seeking City Council’s approval to pay Deputy Police Chief Jesse Leeser to leave the Akron Police Department. Malik submitted legislation on Monday morning seeking $400,000 for a “Voluntary Separation Payment for Police Deputy Chief.” While not yet identified by name in documents — the mayor’s office will issue a press release later today — Signal Akron confirmed it is about Leeser. With Brian Harding’s promotion to police chief, Leeser is the only deputy chief currently with the APD.
Air Quality Alert issued for Summit County through midnight Monday
The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency has issued an air quality alert for Summit County through midnight Monday. The air quality index for the Akron area was 71 as of 7 a.m. Monday, which is considered "moderate," according to AirNow.gov. The air quality will be unhealthy toward sensitive groups. Children, the elderly and those with breathing conditions are advised to shorten the amount of time they spend outdoors today, according to the National Weather Service.
