UTMC offers new commercial ventilator weaning system

Dr. Jill Cherry-Bukowiec, trauma surgery and surgical critical care physician at the University of Toledo Medical Center, said the longer a patient is on a ventilator, the weaker their diaphragm muscles can become. “Patients that are really sick come into the hospital and sometimes need to be intubated,” Dr. Cherry-Bukowiec said. “When that happens, especially to older patients or patients that need the ventilator for a long time, their muscles start to atrophy or stop working as well.” To wean patients off of ventilators faster, the medical center has started to offer the LungPacer AeroPace Neurostimulation System. The system is an FDA approved technology that sends electrical pulses to the phrenic nerve, which supports the diaphragm, to exercise it, allowing the patient to recover from a ventilator faster. The medical center is the first in the region to offer the neurostimulation system commercially, Dr. Cherry-Bukowiec said. Other hospitals including Cleveland Clinic have tested the technology in a research capacity but haven’t offered it to patients. “We’ve been in this field for a long time,” said Dr. Melissa Kukiela, director of respiratory

From concert to care, Strictly R&B Park Jam connects people to mental health support
Trecsie Flanigan didn’t go to a concert last summer looking for help with her mental health — she went for the music. But what she found was a lifeline. Balancing a line‑cook job and the three youngest of her six children, she showed up at Strictly R&B Park Jam last year hoping for a rare night of relief and relaxation. As she checked out the vendor tables, she discovered an after‑school program that seemed like the right fit for her and her children. “I came to see the show,” Ms. Flanigan said. “But I was getting overwhelmed with my kids, getting them back and forth for school and work, so it just seemed like the right time to sign them up.” Mrs. Gist’s Home of Care, a multi‑service youth center in Toledo, provides specialized after‑school care and mental-health programs that support both children and their parents. The staff works to guide children through core social‑emotional skills like managing feelings, impulse control, social awareness, communication, conflict‑resolution, and problem‑solving. The support Ms. Flanigan found that night now shows up in small, everyday moments with her three youngest children — Ahnastee, 14; Marcus, 10; and Kylo, 7. “We do thorns and roses,” Marcus
