Undefeated Georgia high school football team faces GHSA investigation ahead of playoffs
Newton High School's (Covington, GA) undefeated football season could face scrutiny after the Georgia High School Association confirmed it's investigating a report alleging the program used an ineligible player. The GHSA received a report concerning Newton's roster, executive director Tim Scott told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday, Nov. 5. However, the association will not complete its investigation or issue a ruling until after the state playoffs conclude, in accordance with GHSA bylaws. Newton enters the final week of the regular season with a 9-0 record, marking the best start in program history. The Rams are one of the top teams in Class 7A. The potential consequences could be significant if the allegations are substantiated. Under GHSA rules, teams found to have used an ineligible player must forfeit every game in which that player participated. That could include postseason contests, depending on the findings of the investigation. The GHSA has forced five football programs to forfeit at least six games over the past decade following eligibility violations. Several of those cases included playoff victories that were subsequently vacated. Scott cautioned against assuming Newton will face disciplinary action, noting that allegations submitted to the association frequently do not result in penalties. For

Dacula, Mill Creek to battle for third in Region 8-AAAAAAA
Dacula and Mill Creek have experienced similar journeys through the Region 8-AAAAAAA football schedule with each losing to Buford and Collins Hill and defeating the rest of the region. The two rivals play Friday night for third place in the region, though the stakes are a little higher for the Falcons. Dacula sits at No. 34 in the Georgia High School Association PSR Power Rankings, just two spots away from a state playoff berth. A loss to Mill Creek would finish off the Falcons’ postseason hopes. A victory would guarantee Dacula’s first winning record since 2021. Mill Creek is outside of the playoff contenders at No. 41, but it hopes to finish the season on a high note and maintain the upper hand in the rivalry with Dacula — the Hawks have won the last six meetings and 10 of the last 11 in the series. That playoff positioning would have been slightly better with a win over No. 33 Collins Hill last week, but Mill Creek surrendered too many big pass plays in a 42-34 loss. Despite the loss, the Hawks had one of their best nights of the season in the rushing attack as Nick Tuck carried 26

Brookwood chasing region title, win over Peachtree Ridge
With a little help in northern Gwinnett and a win Friday over Peachtree Ridge, Brookwood can win its first region football title since 2021. The Broncos have to avoid an upset by Peachtree Ridge first and foremost, then hope for North Gwinnett to topple Parkview in Suwanee. If Parkview beats North, Parkview would be the region champion. Both Peachtree Ridge (No. 15 in the Georgia High School Association’s PSR Power Rankings) and Brookwood (No. 5 in PSR) are firmly in the top 32 for state playoff berths, but Friday’s results will impact their seedings and first-round opponents. Brookwood returned from a rare two-week bye last Friday with a 53-0 win over Berkmar. Plenty of Broncos got game action and the regulars played sparingly, but both Brayden Tyson (five rushes, 102 yards, three touchdowns) and Michael Johnso (four rushes, 104 yards, TD) made the most their limited touches. Tyson went over 1,000 yards in the win (1,098) and is up to 15 TD runs on the season. It’s been a shaky three-game stretch for previously unbeaten Peachtree Ridge, which lost to Norcross and North Gwinnett before last week’s win over Duluth. The Lions jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead on

Grayson football closes regular season with home game against Rockdale
After watching a lead slip away at unbeaten Newton on Oct. 16, the Grayson football team delivered one of its most complete games of the season two weeks ago. It stifled a talented South Gwinnett offense and rolled up the points in a convincing 52-0 victory on Oct. 23, taking some positive momentum into last week’s bye. The Rams return to action Friday at home against Rockdale County in the regular-season finale, looking to shore up their state playoff position. Before Friday, Grayson boasts a No. 13 ranking in the Georgia High School Association’s PSR Power Rankings. Rockdale has dipped to No. 37 after its run through a tough region. The Rams’ balanced offense has played better as the season has progressed with quarterback Deuce Smith and a stout running game leading the way. Smith has thrown for 1,472 yards and 13 touchdowns, while a bevy of Rams have shared the carries at running back. Cam Hurst (29 catches, 356 yards, four TDs) and Saif Bin-Wahad (27 catches, 350 yards, three TDs) have emerged as the top receivers. Grayson’s defense has totaled 76 tackles for losses and 23 sacks (six by Aaron Black and four by Elijah Tillman). Black and

Lanier football looks to finish strong at Alpharetta
Lanier has played well during the latter stages of the high school football season, a trend it hopes to continue Friday night at Alpharetta in the regular-season finale. The Longhorns, who currently sit outside the 32-team state playoffs at No. 36 in the Georgia High School Association’s PSR Power Rankings, routed Riverwood 56-0 and Johns Creek 43-14 before giving powerhouse Gainesville a challenge last week in a 29-14 loss. They trailed Gainesvile just 15-14 at halftime and fell behind 22-14 late in the third quarter. It remained a one-score game until Gainesville tacked on a touchdown with 1:41 left in the fourth quarter. A gutsy Lanier defensive effort last week was led by Aden Jones (seven tackles, QB hurry, pass breakup), Roman Woods (five tackles, interception), Dameon Billie Jr. (seven tackles, fumble recovery, pass breakup), Yusuf Haqq (seven tackles, one for loss) and Amari Tucker (seven tackles). Ben Vanden Bos gave the offense a spark in a variety of ways — four catches for 104 yards, five rushes for 11 yards and a 10-yard pass completion. Jared Hill (80 percent blocking grade, two pancake blocks, knockdown block) and Emery Bowlick (78 percent blocking grade, pancake block, knockdown block) stood out

Lassiter putting final touch on best season since 2013
Lassiter can secure its best regular season in 13 years and a possible first-round state playoff home game when it goes on the road for its season finale against Rome in a battle of Region 6AAAAAA teams. With a win, Lassiter (7-2, 4-2) -- which is headed to the state playoffs for the first time since 2016 -- would achieve an eighth regular-season for the first time since 2012 and put itself in position to secure a home game for the first round. It would be the first postseason game at Frank Fillmann Stadium for the Trojans since 2013. “I think more than anything, we’re trying not to just sit here and focus on outcomes, but just trying to get better every single day,” Lassiter coach Sean Thom said. “I think our kids aren’t dumb – that’s the one thing about being at a place like Lassiter, they’re aware of kind of what they’ve accomplished. But I think it shows a growing trend of the hard work that they’ve put in. This senior class is going to be highly thanked, because they’ve really helped put this thing in place. When you combine their class with some of the talent in

Buford football one win away from 10-0 regular season, region domination
An 80-yard touchdown pass from Dacula quarterback R.J. Perry to Mohamed Toure — in the first quarter of an Oct. 9 football game — stands alone. While it came in an eventual 48-7 loss, the Falcons scored the only points Buford has allowed this season in a dominant run through Region 8-AAAAAAA. Buford has outscored its opposition 256-7 in five region wins ahead of Friday’s regular-season finale against Central Gwinnett. The reigning state champions haven’t been tested since a 23-13 win at Grayson as they wait their state playoff seeding from the Georgia High School Association’s PSR power rankings, which currently has them at No. 8, a spot behind three-loss Colquitt County. After leading Mill Creek just 14-0 at halftime two weeks ago, Buford got off to a much quicker start last week in a 67-0 win over Discovery. D.J. Hunter completed 5 of 8 passes for 116 yards and three touchdowns, and Brandon Gwinn completed 3 of 5 passes for 65 yards and two TDs on a night when plenty of Wolves played. Braylon Williams, Ian Chafin, Seven Rashad, Colin Oates and Tre Diggs had a TD catch each, and A.J. Granville added a TD run. Buford’s defense was
