Colors in Swayne Field art proposal to be changed after racial concerns raised
A Toledo City Council member has raised questions about a rendering of the proposed Swayne Field artwork, saying its colors evoke watermelon imagery, which has a painful history as a racially demeaning stereotype of Black people. Designed by Blissfield, Mich.-based artist Ken Thompson, the installation would feature two canopy structures in the site’s median, serving as both shelter and artwork. The renderings show red-and-green canopies with blue acrylic panels that some viewers said resemble watermelon seeds, raising concerns that the imagery could be upsetting for residents of Toledo’s Englewood, a richly Black neighborhood. “That’s what it looked like when I saw it — a watermelon with seeds,” said Councilman Cerssandra McPherson. “It’s in our community. This is in a Black community. You can’t do that.” The watermelon stigma has roots in racist caricatures that followed emancipation. Watermelons had been grown and sold by newly freed Black Americans, making the fruit a symbol of self-sufficiency and economic independence. Racist depictions later twisted that association into a demeaning stereotype. “Some people may not see it ... but because that’s my community, that’s my history, I know that’s what people will look at it and think. They were glad that I brought it

This Ohio Diner Serves an Elvis Sundae That Sounds Completely Made Up
Pickles and ice cream in the same sundae, named after Elvis. I had to read that menu idea twice before I believed it was real. The building helps sell the weirdness. A car sits on the roof, and the inside is covered with license plates, records, posters, and celebrity photos.

The Countertop Shop Releases Comprehensive Educational Guide on Surface Science, Edge Profiling, and Integrated Home Technologies in Northwest Ohio
The Countertop Shop has officially published an extensive industry report and educational guide examining surface material durability, thermal resistance parameters, and structural fabrication standards across residential and commercial properties throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. The newly released publication details the physical and chemical engineering behind natural and engineered surfaces, contrasting high-density granite and non-porous quartz with compact surfaces, soapstone, marble, solid surface, and high-pressure laminate. By drawing upon over two decades of fabrication and installation experience in Monclova, the organization aims to elevate regional home renovation standards and assist property owners in selecting surface solutions tailored to their lifestyle demands. This educational rollout serves as a direct response to the growing regional demand for objective consumer information and material transparency, particularly among homeowners searching for a comprehensive countertop showroom in Toledo, OH. The document explicitly outlines how improper sealing on natural stone, inadequate substrate support, or unmitigated thermal shock can compromise surface longevity, cause edge chipping, and trigger premature wear if left unaddressed.
