4 Ohio Meat Markets Where the Bratwurst Gets Stuffed In-House Every Week
One small Ohio deli sells homemade brats so good that people eat lunch there, then buy more to take home. That’s a real habit, and it tells you plenty. Fresh sausage has a short window. Shops that grind, season, and stuff their own links can’t hide behind a long shelf life.

11-year-old Toledo student goes from reluctant writer to published author
Maxwell McCain used to hate writing so much that his teachers enlisted his parents to make sure he finished his essays. Now the 11-year-old Byrnedale Elementary School sixth grader is a published author. “I used to hate writing, but now I like to write,” Maxwell said. “It took me three weeks to write the book. It is a great feeling being published. I think it gave me confidence.” His book, Choose your Words, Keep your Friends , was released on Amazon at a.co/d/085ZHwo9 in August and has sold 97 copies. “My husband Tyrone and I would get messages from Ms. Ericka Stone, his teacher, asking us to get Maxwell to finish his essays,” his mother, Monica McCain, said. “Now he has a book out. It is just crazy.” Mrs. McCain, a special education parent liaison for Toledo Public Schools, said Maxwell took part in the Young Empowered Authors summer program at the Anthem Welcome Center. LeSean Shaw, vice president of programs for EmpoweredAI, a Toledo nonprofit, ran the program. The students learned how to write a book and use software to create illustrations, Mrs. McCain said. “They went through the elements of how to write a story with the kids,”

Head To This Storied, Family-Owned Ohio Steakhouse With A Presidential Theme For The Prime Rib

Pig Fest celebrates Toledo’s creativity, appetite, and a flying-pig story
Toledo is bringing home the bacon this fall with a festival celebrating bold food and Toledo grit. When Toledo School for the Arts was taking shape in 1998, a prominent Toledoan reportedly said a dedicated arts school would exist in Toledo “when pigs fly,” said Dave Gierke, the school’s development director. Months later, at the first orientation for 130 students and their parents, founding director Martin D. Porter turned the phrase on its head: “Ladies and gentlemen, today pigs fly,” Mr. Gierke recalled, adding that the flying pig became TSA’s unofficial mascot. TSA’s flying-pig story was the perfect inspiration for Toledo Pig Fest and a fitting reflection of Toledo’s can-do spirit. After the success of Toledo Pickle Mania in the Warehouse District and inspired by Bacon Fest in the Dayton area, organizer Cheryl Hardy wanted to offer a similar specialty-food experience. “Businesses and even the food trucks were much more excited about Pig Fest after we held Pickle Fest originally,” she said. Toledo Pig Fest will bring 18 food trucks, local restaurants, vendors, and live entertainment to UpTown Toledo from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday with specialty drinks, desserts, and a creative lineup of bacon- and pork-inspired dishes.
