Marijuana tax money foots bill for Michigan township’s new $800K firetruck
JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Leoni Township and Jackson County as a whole will benefit from having a new firetruck paid for by marijuana tax money. The brand-new 2000 gallon-tanker truck is being built from scratch by Rosenbauer Fire Apparatus after the Leoni Township Board of Trustees approved using funds collected from the Marijuana Excise Tax to pay for the new $842,000 rig, township officials said Wednesday, April 24.

JACKSON, MI – A major street in Jackson will be closed starting Thursday morning due to a sinkhole. North Elm Avenue between East Ganson and East North Street will be closed staring 7 a.m. April 25 for urgent street repair, according to a notice form the city of Jackson.
Woman free on bond in murder case arrested for impaired driving
JACKSON COUNTY, MI – A woman free on bond and facing open murder charges for her alleged role in the death of a Jackson man who was stabbed 70 times has been arrested again. Klaira Diann Mishaw was arrested Tuesday afternoon, on suspected driving while under the influence of drugs and resisting arrest, violating the conditions of her bond, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Man convicted of kidnapping, raping 13-year-old to be paroled after appeal denied
ANN ARBOR, MI – A man convicted of kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old girl will be released on parole after a judge denied an emergency appeal. John Robert Lee, 44, is scheduled to be leave the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility in Jackson sometime in early May after the Michigan Parole Board granted him freedom for a second time, according to Kyle Kaminski, spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Corrections.
$1M anonymous gift brings Jackson’s Cascades Falls reconstruction closer to reality
JACKSON, MI -- Efforts to improve and rehabilitate one of Jackson’s oldest landmarks have gotten a major boost through an anonymous donation. The Jackson County Board of Commissioners has received a $1-million donation from an anonymous local source, officials said. The money was given with the intent to bolster ongoing renovation work at Jackson’s Cascades Falls.
Dexter Stamping Co. is closing, impacting 66 employees in Jackson
JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Automotive supplier and manufacturer Dexter Stamping Co. is expected to close in Jackson at the end of July. On Monday, April 15, the company notified the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity that its facility at 1013 Thorrez Road near Jackson, will permanently close July 31, ending the jobs of 66 employees.

Hammer-wielding man arrested after breaking into Southwest Michigan house
VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI -- A man has been arrested after breaking into a house and trying to fight off police when they arrived to confront him. Van Buren County Sheriff deputies made contact with the man around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 22 in the 51000 block of County Road 380 in Columbia Township, according to a press release. He put up a fight, as police had to force their way into the house to get him, per the release.
