Editorial: More housing needed in area
The headlines converging on the news pages of The Blade tell a compelling story on the complex problem that government, business, and community leaders must work together to solve. Both the city of Toledo and Lucas County are wrestling with severe budget problems that force austerity measures that can only be solved in the long run by economic growth. Read more Blade editorials Six decades of population loss makes holding existing residents and attracting new arrivals the most important priority for Toledo. The first BuildToledo Developer Summit held Wednesday shows deep understanding that affordable housing is the key to success on the goal of growth. The event also illustrates the high hurdle for development caused by aging property and constrained local incomes. “I know one of the things that is going to come up from all the developers is that it costs more to build in Toledo than any other large city in Ohio, yet our rents are much lower than anywhere else,” Joe Marck of IBC Properties said as part of a panel detailing the challenges confronting Toledo developers. Toledo can’t quickly make it more profitable to build in the city, but it can make it much easier as

Editorial: Trust a must in Monclova plan
The plans to create a new $21 million manufacturing facility in Monclova Township — under a tax sharing agreement with Maumee and Toledo — show the enduring value that regional cooperation can have. It also illustrates how common it is for negotiations over industrial development to take place, with the public kept in the dark as to the nature of the manufacturing. Obviously, voters have to trust the judgment of their elected representatives. As reported in Thursday’s Blade by Alice Momany, an unnamed company will make an unnamed product in a new facility that will be incentivized by state funds. When this is project is done, there will be a new manufacturing company and an additional 45-acre parcel teed up for more such development. What we know is that the city of Toledo council has an ordinance that will create a funding mechanism to extend Riverfort Drive in Monclova Township and build utilities to support the new business. It is not an existing Toledo-based company, and if this agreement is successful, it will create 95 new jobs within the zone, and generate approximately $6.4 million in annual payroll. The cost of the roadway and utilities improvements is estimated at $1.58

Independent testing finds toxic chemicals near Brent Industries fire site
Soil and ash samples collected near Brent Industries after its deadly Aug. 18 fire contained dioxin and benzo(a)pyrene, according to preliminary testing presented Thursday by a nationally known independent scientist. Scott Smith of Massachusetts came to South Toledo on Aug. 29, 11 days after the fire and pair of explosions at 2924 South Ave., to gather soil and ash samples. He said he took them from within a half-mile of Brent Industries but has no idea yet how far the fallout migrated. The results were the highlight of a presentation Mr. Smith made Thursday night inside the Toledo Lucas County Public Library’s West Toledo Branch. The results convinced him of a need for more sampling, which Mr. Smith said he will do Friday at additional undisclosed locations near Brent Industries. Results from that second round of sampling will likely be presented in January, said attorney Mindy Bish, managing partner of the Atlanta-based Keenan Law Firm, which pays for Mr. Smith’s research expenses at no charge to local communities. The Brent Industries incident is the 90th in which Mr. Smith has pulled samples and had them analyzed at an independent laboratory. One of his highest-profile cases has been detailing what he

The Countertop Shop Releases Comprehensive Educational Guide on Surface Science, Edge Profiling, and Integrated Home Technologies in Northwest Ohio
The Countertop Shop has officially published an extensive industry report and educational guide examining surface material durability, thermal resistance parameters, and structural fabrication standards across residential and commercial properties throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. The newly released publication details the physical and chemical engineering behind natural and engineered surfaces, contrasting high-density granite and non-porous quartz with compact surfaces, soapstone, marble, solid surface, and high-pressure laminate. By drawing upon over two decades of fabrication and installation experience in Monclova, the organization aims to elevate regional home renovation standards and assist property owners in selecting surface solutions tailored to their lifestyle demands. This educational rollout serves as a direct response to the growing regional demand for objective consumer information and material transparency, particularly among homeowners searching for a comprehensive countertop showroom in Toledo, OH. The document explicitly outlines how improper sealing on natural stone, inadequate substrate support, or unmitigated thermal shock can compromise surface longevity, cause edge chipping, and trigger premature wear if left unaddressed.
