Shark River Channel to be closed to marine traffic Tuesday and Wednesday
BELMAR/AVON-BY-THE-SEA — The Shark River Channel between the boroughs of Belmar and Avon-By-The-Sea will be closed to marine traffic on Tuesday, April 30 and Wednesday, May 1 for emergency repairs to the Route 71 Drawbridge. The closure, which will begin at 6 a.m. on Tuesday and go on until 6 p.m.
Brick Township emergency authorities respond to fire at Lincoln Court plaza
UPDATED: 4/29 at 3:00 P.M. BRICK TOWNSHIP — A fire broke out at 358 Herbertsville Road in the Lincoln Court Plaza, home to Cuzzin’s Pizza, Jay’s Food Market and Jerry’s Dry Cleaner, at 4:52 p.m. on April 27, according to the Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety. According to the bureau, Brick Township police noticed workers exiting the roof.
Power outage caused by utility pole crash, police say
WALL TOWNSHIP — Wall Township police said a power outage that occurred early Thursday afternoon in Wall Township and its neighboring municipalities was caused by a car crashing into a utility pole. The crash occurred on Hospital Road, the department announced. Emergency crews were previously on site. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash; Hospital Road between Atlantic Avenue and Squankum-Allenwood Road will be closed for “an extended amount of time.”
Step Up for the Arc fundraiser set for May 18
BRICK TOWNSHIP — The Arc, Ocean County Chapter will be holding its 22nd Annual Step Up for The Arc Walk and Inaugural 5K race at ShoreTown Ballpark, home of the Jersey Shore BlueClaws on May 18. The Arc’s Ocean County Chapter is located in Brick and the event will help benefit programs and support services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Public hearing on $6.1M municipal budget set for May 28
AVON-BY-THE-SEA — The Avon-By-The-Sea Board of Commissioners introduced the 2024 municipal budget, which would increase the tax rate from .264 in 2023 to .269 this year, by resolution during its Monday, April 22 meeting. The board will be holding a public hearing and more detailed discussion regarding the budget and the effect it will have on taxpayers on Tuesday, May 28 at 5 p.m.
DOE releases NJSLA assessment results for last school year
OCEAN COUNTY — The New Jersey Department of Education (DOE) released its School Performance Reports for the 2022-2023 school year earlier this month, underscoring some differences in student testing on the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) in bordering county municipalities. The NJSLA has three separate test sections for students, including English language arts (ELA), mathematics and science.
‘Mind if I cut in?’ Brick Senior Citizen Prom returns to Brick
BRICK TOWNSHIP — The Senior Citizen Prom returns to Brick Township on Friday, May 3 at 6 p.m. at the Brick Township Civic Plaza, 270 Chambers Bridge Road. Mayor Lisa Crate, the township council and the Brick Recreation Department invite residents 65 and over to dust off their dancing shoes and prepare to step back in time as they bring an evening filled with nostalgia, music and dancing.
Centennial festivities kick off this Sunday
LAKE COMO — This weekend will kickoff centennial festivities in honor of the borough’s centennial year, with a 100th Anniversary Party to be held this Sunday, April 28. The 100th Anniversary Party will be held at Joe’s Surf Shack, 415 18th Ave., this Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. The event is free to attend and open to the public.
Recycled Christmas trees benefit Slade Dale restoration
POINT PLEASANT — Nearly 500 donated Christmas trees were upcycled and transported into the waters of the Slade Dale Sanctuary early Sunday morning for the American Littoral Society’s sixth annual Earth Day volunteer event, in an effort to improve the 13-acre preserve along Beaverdam Creek. Scout groups, resident volunteers, the environmental commission, public works department and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church members all work together to make this project a reality, year after year.
Amid lawsuit, bill introduced on 5G FCC regulations
BELMAR — With tensions rising over Verizon’s plan to install 20, 30-foot 5G cell towers along Ocean Avenue in Belmar, U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith (R) has introduced legislation that could potentially help empower local residents who would be impacted by the installation of the towers. The new legislation would nullify two administrative regulations issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2018 that imposed “shot clocks” that limit the input of town and county governments regarding construction of the infrastructure needed to advance 5G wireless.

Sea Watch building construction making progress
MANASQUAN — Years in the making, the expansion project of the Sea Watch beachfront building is now slated for total completion by early July. Site utility work was completed earlier this year, and work on the building itself began in March, confirmed borough engineer Joe Raftery, of Colliers Engineering and Design, during his report to the council at its April 1 meeting.
$2.4 million grant awarded for Sylvan Lake
BRADLEY BEACH/AVON-BY-THE-SEA — The state Department of Transportation [DOT] has awarded a $2.4 million grant for improvements to Sylvan Lake amid what members of the Sylvan Lake Commission called the “worst conditions in 50 years.” Bradley Beach Mayor Larry Fox announced on April 10 that the grant was secured with assistance from state Sen.
Pyanoe Plaza sees Earth Day beautification project
BELMAR — Pyanoe Plaza has welcomed a breath of fresh air this past week thanks to a beautification project offering new life to the community space. Down to Earth Landscaping, in partnership with the Belmar Shade Tree Commission, has installed new trees, shrubs and flowers at Belmar’s Pyanoe Plaza to replace its current foliage as part of its Beautify Belmar initiative.
Wall Library holding annual specialty book sale
WALL TOWNSHIP – The Wall Township Library, 2700 Allaire Road, is holding a book sale until May 1, selling books, CD’s, DVD’s, records, and puzzles for discounted prices. The sale, which started on April 20, has such items selling for 25 cents to $1. April 25, starts the $2 bag sale; Residents can visit the library and collect various items to take home with them.
Township adopts $117 million municipal budget
BRICK TOWNSHIP — The township approved its municipal budget of $117,737,525, which will see a tax rate of .792, a 3.8% increase from the previous year, at the Tuesday, April 23 council meeting. The average assessed valuation of a home in Brick Township is $303,417, and will see a tax bill increase of $87.99 from the previous year.
Beach mayor and council host first town hall meeting
POINT PLEASANT BEACH — The first in a planned series of town hall meetings was held on Tuesday by the mayor and several council members, who addressed a range of issues facing the borough in a less formal atmosphere than the town’s council meetings. Prior to the two-hour meeting, Mayor Doug Vitale told The Ocean Star his hope was that the town hall meeting would increase transparency among the residents and elected officials of the borough, and that more such town hall meetings would be held in the future.
Manasquan introduces $20M budget: Tax rate to increase 2.28%
MANASQUAN — The Manasquan mayor and council introduced the 2024 municipal budget at its April 15 meeting, scheduling a presentation and public hearing for May 20. The council previously held two meetings on March 16 and 23 to present the budget in its tentative form. This year’s municipal tax rate would be 0.404 per capita, an increase from last year’s rate of 0.395.
Community effort beautifies Edgemere, Station parks
SEA GIRT — This past Saturday, April 20, a group of volunteers took to both Edgemere and Stations parks for Sea Girt Conservancy’s “Mulch Madness” beautification day. The event also honored community members for National Volunteer Week and the continuous contributions they make throughout the year. SLH Tri-Shore Little League Opening Day postponed until future date
SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS –– The Spring Lake Heights Tri-Shore Little League Opening Day annual parade, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 20 has been postponed until a to-be-determined date due to inclement weather that hit the region this morning. Vicent Daino, President of the Tri-Shore Little League said that this coming Saturday is under consideration for rescheduling, but will be decided at a later time.
