ISHPEMING — The streak continues for the Menominee Junior High School track and field team. On May 28, Menominee competed at the MHSAA Zone 8 Regional championships and both the boys and girls 400-meter relay teams brought home Regional trophies after topping the field in their respective races. Menominee’s pair of Regional titles extended the Maroons’ 4x100 relay winning streak to 19 years in which either the boys, girls, or both relay teams won the event in every meet. Audrey Hofer, Daly Butler, Violet Schuettpelz and Piper Chapman broke their own school record after burning up the asphalt in 53.63 seconds. Meanwhile, the boys’ contingent of Owen Nemetz, Jenssen Roberts, Karter Connaher and Asher Wilke finished their race with a season-best time of 49.74. Butler and Wilke also captured a pair of individual Regional titles. Butler shattered her own school record in the long jump with a first-place leap measuring 16 feet, six inches. Butler’s jump was the seventh-best in the state of Michigan. Butler rounded out her day with a fourth-place finish of 1:06.11 in the 400m dash. My UP Sports Player Spotlight: Negaunee's Rachel Niskanen returns to Sweetgrass
HARRIS, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) - Negaunee native and current Central Michigan student Rachel Niskanen just wrapped up her third year as a member of the Chippewa Women's Golf Team, a year that included her best 18-hole finish to date. “College golf is great. Super busy. I love it,” said Niskanen. “I wouldn't change anything for the world. Definitely lots of ups and downs. I did have a PR in the spring, so that was nice. I've never actually shot under par before, so, shot a 69. That was really fun. But then also, you know, you have the downs. Didn't play that great in the conference championship and towards the later spring. But yeah, just a lot of practicing, trying to dial in the swing, and I have a couple other tournaments this summer.” She’s now preparing to make her return to the Island Resort Championship later this month. The two-time U.P. golf champion at Negaunee was invited to play at the event for the first time in 2025, receiving a sponsor exemption to play among some of the best ladies golfers in the world. "I can definitely tell you it's been the greatest golf experience of my life, probably,” said

Menominee's pitching prowess pushes Maroons to District title
GLADSTONE — Gladstone may have held home field advantage but Menominee simply had the better team as the Maroons blasted the Braves 10-0 to capture the MHSAA Division 3 District 66 baseball championship on Friday. Pitching was central to Menominee’s success, as a trio of hurlers made life miserable for both the Braves and Iron Mountain, whom the Maroons downed in the semifinal round to earn the right to square off with Gladstone in Friday’s marquee bout. Menominee narrowly out-hit Gladstone by a 5-4 margin but errors proved too costly for the Braves to overcome, as four of the Maroons’ 10 runs were results of miscues in the field. Urijah Linsmeier and Aiden Beal combined to turn in a masterful performance on the mound, with Linsemier collecting the win after spinning five-and-two-thirds innings of four hit ball before turning the rosin bag over to Beal, who recorded Menominee’s third and final out in the top of the sixth inning. Garrett Carlson got Menominee off and running with an RBI-single in the bottom of the first before coming around to score off a liner into left field by Robert Finger. Finger scored on Gladstone’s first error of the afternoon and just

New display memorializes 1969 Bishop Baraga basketball champions at Marquette Regional History Center
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) - Among the thousands of artifacts on display at the Marquette Regional History Center, a new piece represents the story of the 1969 state champion Bishop Baraga High School basketball team. It was the final season for the team, as the school closed at the conclusion of the school year. "During the school year, we found out that Bishop Baraga was going to be closing, and so that would be our last year," said Gordy LeDuc, head coach of the team during the 1969 season. "So, we knew it maybe a month, month and a half before. Then as the season got closer to ending, the tournaments and that, it started to sink in a little bit more that this would be our last basketball team there." Battling injuries and off-the-court issues, the team began the year with just a 4-9 record. With one final chance to leave a legacy at their school, the Royals needed to gel as the postseason approached. "Going into the tournament, we had a losing record," said Fred Huffman, a guard for the Royals in 1969. "We were 8-10 and we won eight straight games in a row." The team battled their
