No. 1 Xavier routs Newton 48-9, returns to the UNI-Dome
CEDAR RAPIDS — From the very first snap, the Saints were superior. Six straight scores on offense. Six straight stops on defense. And an emphatic return to the UNI-Dome. Top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier earned its 24th consecutive win in dominant fashion, hammering No. 8 Newton 48-9 in a Class 4A football quarterfinal Friday night at Saints Field. “All night long, we were able to execute our gameplan,” quarterback Cash Parks said after running for five short touchdowns, all in the first half. “This has been one of our goals since the beginning of the season. Now we’ve got to do our job and get ready for next week.” Xavier (11-0) will face No. 4 Western Dubuque (10-1) in a semifinal at 7 p.m. next Thursday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The Saints earned a hard-fought 21-13 win at Epworth in Week 2. “We played complementary football again this week,” Coach Duane Schulte said. “It’s a good way to win football games.” The Saints have won their first two postseason games by a combined margin of 100-9. Newton (7-4) has a productive back in Isaiah Hansen, who entered the game with 1,251 rushing yards. The Saints held him to 16

AMES — Iowa State forward Taj Manning is unlikely to fill up the stat sheet enough to participate in many postgame news conference’s this season. But that didn’t stop him from earning a strong special mention from his head coach, T.J. Otzelberger, after his trademark tenacity put a firm stamp on the No. 18 Cyclones’ 83-57 win over Southern Miss in Friday’s home season opener. “The guy (who) will be the most unheralded, (who’s) probably been the most winning player is Taj Manning,” Otzelberger said after Manning swatted away a career-high four blocks before a crowd of 13,920 at Hilton Coliseum. “He makes play after play defensively, at the rim, in rotation, guarding the basketball. His minutes are gonna continue to elevate. It’s real hard to keep him off the floor and it’s not always gonna show up with the points, but defensively, he really gives us an indignity and we’re gonna continue to lean into that.” That’s at least partly because this ISU team (1-1) is still trying to forge that identity. It always stems from stern defense, forcing live ball turnovers, and hoarding rebounds, and Otzelberger said his talented, but largely new group of players are a “work
