Fast-food chain has closed two Johnson County restaurants. More remain open

Arby’s has shut down two of its restaurants in Johnson County, leaving a suburb with just one location remaining. Two Arby’s restaurants in Olathe have closed: 13790 S. Black Bob Road and 18615 W. 151st St. Signs direct customers to the remaining Olathe spot: 18060 W. 119th St. Arby’s has yanked the addresses of both closed locations from its website. The Star contacted Arby’s parent company, Inspire Brands, for comment. The company did not respond Wednesday. Flynn Group, a popular franchisee with dozens of Kansas locations, also did not respond. There does not appear to be any other affected locations. Managers at several different Johnson County locations said they had not been alerted of a closure. About 14 Arby’s locations remain in the metro. Spots in Johnson County include: 15021 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, 9525 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park and 11445 W. 63rd St. in Shawnee. No national closings have been reported this month, but late last year, Arby’s quietly closed dozens of locations after sales dropped by more than 6%, according to reporting from TheStreet. Arby’s has been serving roast-beef sandwiches, curly fries and shakes since its inception in 1964.

Rev. Hamilton is going to Washington. What will that mean for his church?

Rev. Hamilton is going to Washington. But how often will he come back? Kansans have reasons to wonder, having just booted Sen. Roger Marshall from office Tuesday, in part because of how absent he seemed from the state he represented. Few believed Marshall was rushing back on weekends to the one-bedroom hunting shack he kept in rural Stafford County. His million-dollar vacation home in Sarasota, Florida, seemed a more likely destination when he wasn’t in Washington. Even if Senator-elect Adam Hamilton, who defeated Marshall, wanted to spend his free time on a white-sand Florida beach, he has a practical reason to come home. He has a church to run — and not just any church, but the largest United Methodist congregation in the country, the Leawood-based Church of the Resurrection, with 25,000 members. And he intends to keep running it, at least part-time. Resurrection laid out Hamilton’s plans in a detailed announcement Wednesday. In the short term, Hamilton will attend Senate orientation in Washington, then take a previously planned two-week vacation with his wife, LaVon. He’ll return to the pulpit Nov. 29 and continue leading services through Christmas. “I can hardly wait to return to a regular preaching schedule for

Paul Rudd, Overland Park get a shout-out when CNN announces Adam Hamilton victory

Welp, we did not have “Paul Rudd” on our election night bingo card. But the “Ant-Man” actor scored a surprise shout-out as Jake Tapper on CNN announced that Adam Hamilton defeated Kansas Senator Roger Marshall in a shocking win Tuesday. Tapper threw the live coverage to Hamilton headquarters in Overland Park, “the home of Paul Rudd,” he said. Rudd, born in New Jersey, spent much of his childhood in Johnson County then studied theater at the University of Kansas. And Tapper would know that because the CNN anchor is a regular celebrity guest at Big Slick, the annual Children’s Mercy fundraiser that Rudd co-hosts. In October, Rudd co-hosted a get-out-the-vote event in New York with “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The event raised money for Latino Victory Project and Onward Together , nonprofit groups that work on voter mobilization and getting people involved in the political process. Jimmy Fallon, Adam Scott and Rita Wilson were among the celebrities who participated.

Johnson County electing 11 new Democrat lawmakers ends a Republican supermajority

Johnson County voters could send nearly a dozen new Democratic lawmakers to the Kansas House, helping reshape the Legislature and break up a Republican supermajority. Kansas Democrats needed to gain five seats in the House to end the Republican stranglehold on the chamber. They gained those seats and much more in Johnson County. The tidal wave of votes for Democratic candidates in the suburban Kansas City county drove a historic night for the political party, which saw its first candidate elected to the U.S. Senate in nearly a century. The county’s voters flipped 11 of the 20 state legislative seats expected to switch from Republican to Democratic control once vote totals are finalized. Democrats are now expected to hold 25 of the county’s 27 seats in the Kansas House. Several of those races came down to the wire and may not be fully decided until all mail ballots are counted this week. But the outcome shows that Johnson County’s voters practically single-handedly ended the Republican supermajority. The walloping of Republican candidates reflected a motivated electorate. Johnson County saw its second-highest turnout for a midterm election in history, with 62% of registered voters casting ballots. The only midterm with a higher
