'The Ten Commandments,' 70 years old, has this North Jersey connection

Pompton Lakes is not the Red Sea. And North Jersey is not North Africa — where Cecil B. DeMille and his cast of thousands restaged the exodus from Egypt, on location, in his supreme blockbuster, "The Ten Commandments." Yet the fingerprints of New Jersey are all over the 1956 movie classic, which celebrates its 70th anniversary on Nov. 8. Skewers of slow-roasted meat get carved right at your table here, one juicy slice at a time. That alone is enough to make me hungry before lunch even starts. The walls are lined with vintage Portuguese tiles, and the framed menus speak both English and Portuguese. The same family has kept this kitchen going since the 1970s, and their descendants still run it today.

8 exceptional bakeries to get Thanksgiving pies in North Jersey

Getting put on the Thanksgiving pie article is tough, because — contrary to the dinner, which is easy to mess up — I genuinely believe holiday pies are better homemade. For 98% of the time. Buttery crust filled with mom's hand-whisked custard, caramelized apples peeled by grandma; swirl on the whipped cream and you've got a slice of culinary heaven that's impossible to top... ...unless your local pastry shop is run by someone who also happens to bake at that level, in addition to having a cake-centric career, a cookie-inspired Instagram page and a professional dessert education. (Sorry, Grandma. You're not Christina Tosi .) Since I've been assigned this duty, then, I've compiled a few bakeries that can compete with, or — God forbid — surpass, the treats of our most beloved family members. From Bergen, Passaic, Morris and Essex counties, here are eight exceptional bake spots to get Thanksgiving pies in North Jersey. **NOTE: Pre-ordering is recommended, if not required, at most spots. Details included. 5 Best Restaurants in Paterson, New Jersey You Need to Try Before Everyone Else Finds Them

Paterson, New Jersey — a city where the Passaic River tumbles over Great Falls and the streets pulse with the music of many tongues, where old textile mills stand beside vibrant bodegas, and the air is alive with the scent of shawarma, empanadas, and fried chicken. Here, the city’s heart beats in the laughter of Dominican families on stoops, the quiet pride of Turkish grocers, the dreams of Palestinian bakers, and the hustle of newcomers drawn by the promise of something better.
